Chris Evert has stirred controversy with her bold remarks on Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek after the 21-year-old's triumph at the 2025 French Open. Tennis fans lashed out at the American legend over her take on Gauff's victory.

Gauff clinched her maiden French Open title by claiming a 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 win over Aryna Sabalenka in the blockbuster final. On the other hand, Swiatek missed the opportunity to make history by winning her fourth consecutive title at the claycourt Major after suffering a 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-0 loss to Sabalenka in the semifinals.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the final, Chris Evert asserted that while Iga Swiatek had become renowned for her dominance on clay, Coco Gauff possessed the ability to match that dominance. Evert went so far as to say that the 21-year-old had a better version of Swiatek's game and disclosed she would pick Gauff as the perennial French Open favorite.

"Everyone has always been talking about Iga [Swiatek] and her dominance on red clay, but Coco [Gauff] can have dominance on red clay for sure, the way she played," Evert said. "She plays Iga’s game a little bit better. She beat her what? 6-1, 6-1 a couple of weeks ago. I think when I start looking at Roland Garros picks, I am always going to go for Coco before I go for anybody else."

Fans did not take kindly to Chris Evert's "delusional" comments and accused the former World No. 1 of being biased against Iga Swiatek. One of them even suggested that Evert was very critical of the Pole because she didn't want her French Open record to be surpassed.

"Chris Evert is just salty when it comes to Iga 😂 All she did was bash Iga during the commentary in the Iga-Aryna match because she knows Iga was close to breaking her win streak at RG and knows Iga may pass her RG slam count when its all said and done," one fan commented.

"Chris is delusional and extremely uninformed. If you listen to her she is one of the dumbest people on tv," another fan chimed in.
"We highkey need to start ignoring certain people because they'll say whatever just to stay relevant or get paid," said another.

Fans continued to complain about Evert's "absurd" remarks about Coco Gauff and Swiatek.

"I heard that, absolutely absurd take. Evert always seemed such an astute, smart player, but as an analyst she just says anything," one fan posted.
"One thing about Chrissy Evert, she’s not gonna take her foot off Iga’s neck," another fan wrote.

"Chris Evert just said that Coco plays Iga's game better than her," said another.

Despite fans' strong accusations, Chris Evert has previously said that Iga Swiatek would not only surpass her record of seven French Open titles but would even go on to hit double digits at the claycourt Major.

In the same interview, Chris Evert confidently stated that Coco Gauff would eventually complete the career Grand Slam by triumphing at all four Majors, given her all-surface game. She also emphasized that Gauff had the ability to win a Wimbledon title.

"She (Coco Gauff) is going to win all of them, yeah. For sure, she can win on every surface," Evert said. "She has won on clay and on hard. I can definitely see that she can win Wimbledon."

Despite Evert's optimistic prediction, the 21-year-old might face a difficult challenge while attempting to win at SW19 since she has never advanced past the fourth round of the grasscourt Major.

Coco Gauff will kick off her preparations for the 2025 Wimbledon Championships at the Berlin Tennis Open. The likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula and Zheng Qinwen will join the American at the WTA 500 event, which begins on June 16.
