Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, the famed Big Three, were recently a topic of discussion for John Isner, Sam Querrey, and Steve Johnson. The American former ATP stars discussed these names on their podcast. Following this, their compatriot Reilly Opelka has opined that Isner, Querrey, and Johnson talking about the Big Three is only about getting more views.
Isner, a former World No. 8, retired in 2023, while Querrey, a former World No. 11, and Johnson, a former World No. 21, bid farewell to tennis in 2022 and 2024 respectively. The three, along with another former No. 8, Jack Sock, host their podcast, Nothing Major, which debuted in July this year.
On the most recent episode of the podcast, Isner, Querrey, and Johnson discussed who among Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic was the 'scariest' to face. Isner recalled the first time he watched Nadal in action. The comments were also shared on Instagram. The post was captioned:
"Who was the most intimidating of the Big 3?"
Following this, Reilly Opelka, a former World No. 17 who returned to action earlier this year after almost two years out with injuries, took notice and made his feelings clear in the comments.
The 27-year-old suggested that mentioning the Big Three is a great way to get more views. Opelka wrote,
"Whenever the views are getting low, just mention big 3. Guaranteed 300k reel."
In 2022, Opelka had opined that following the Big Three's exit from tennis, the sport would become more entertaining.
Reilly Opelka once voiced his take on tennis after the end of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's careers
Roger Federer retired in 2022, while Rafael Nadal's swansong came at the recently-concluded 2024 Davis Cup Finals, leaving Novak Djokovic as the only active player among the Big Three. Two years ago, in an interview with Red Bull, Reilly Opelka opined that following the retirements of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, there would be more players who would step up to win Grand Slams. Opelka said,
"They’re on their way out, but it’s crazy. It’s all I’ve known, it’s all most of us have known. I’m curious to see what it is like. [The list of winners] will be more spread out and I think it will help the sport. It will bring more attention to more countries.
"All of Greece is going to watch tennis once [Stefanos] Tsitsipas wins a Slam, and all of Italy is going to be following it when Matteo [Berrettini] wins one. I think it will more exciting,"
2024 was the first year since 2002 that none of the Big Three won a Major. The Grand Slams this year were shared among World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic, the 24-time Major winner who won three out of the four Slams in 2023, reached the Australian Open semifinals, the French Open quarterfinals, and the Wimbledon final. However, Alcaraz made surprisingly short work of Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, breezing past the Serb to win the grasscourt Major for the second straight year.
