Novak Djokovic has made history as the longest reigning World No. 1 with a record 378 weeks atop the rankings. The Serb surpassed Steffi Graf on Monday to achieve the top spot.

A video clip of seven-year-old Djokovic has resurfaced after his historic achievement and gone viral on social media. In the clip, the young Serb admits that tennis is more of an obligation than just fun and games.

When asked about the goals he would like to achieve in tennis, the seven-year-old replied that he wanted to become World No. 1, words which have come to be prophetic given his recent achievement.

"My goal is to become No. 1," the young Serb said.

After overtaking Graf, the 22-time Grand Slam Champion expressed his gratitude towards his fans for their love and support throughout his career. He acknowledged that their strength has helped him achieve many great accomplishments, including breaking the record for most weeks at No. 1 in the rankings and surpassing tennis legend Steffi Graf.

"Of course with your love and great strength that you have given me over the years, I’ve managed to achieve many fantastic achievements throughout my career," Djokovic said.
"The most recent one breaking the record 378 weeks on No. 1 rankings, surpassing one of the greatest, most legendary tennis players — both men and women — that ever played, Steffi Graf. So I’m flattered, obviously extremely, extremely proud and happy for this achievement," he added.

The Serb also posted a picture of himself celebrating the achievement with a customized cake.

"Blessed and grateful," he wrote.

After his record 10th championship win at the Australian Open, the Serb is making his return to the ATP Tour at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Djokovic has won the title in Dubai five times previously, with his most recent victory coming in 2020.

The 35-year-old expressed his happiness at being back in the welcoming environment of Dubai. He said that tennis fans in Dubai were very appreciative of the players and added that he was looking forward to a great atmosphere on the court.

“People love tennis here. People appreciate tennis players here. I feel comfortable. I feel welcomed. I’ve had plenty of support in previous years when I’ve played in Dubai. I’m really looking forward to a great atmosphere on the court,” the World No. 1 said.

Novak Djokovic will take on Tomas Machac in his opening match in Dubai. The pair have never faced each other on the ATP tour before.
