WTA rankings update: Iga Swiatek remains steady as No. 1, Marta Kostyuk makes her top 40 debut as Leylah Fernandez suffers a huge drop | March 6, 2023

This week's WTA rankings sees Iga Swiatek commence her 49th week as the World No. 1. She's on track to complete at least a year as the top-ranked player. She also has a healthy lead of 4485 points over No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka.

Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur follow at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Caroline Garcia had a shot at moving up by a spot. However, a loss in the Monterrey Open final kept her steady at No. 5.

Coco Gauff (No. 6), Maria Sakkari (No. 7), Daria Kasatkina (No. 8), Belinda Bencic (No. 9), and Elena Rybakina (No. 10) complete the top 10, which remains unchanged from the previous week.

Donna Vekic claimed her fourth career title over the weekend at the Monterrey Open. She defeated Garcia in three sets and jumped eight places in this week's WTA rankings to No. 23.

29-year old Zhu Lin, who's having a career-best season on the WTA tour, also moved up by eight spots to No. 33. This marks a new career high for the Chinese player, thanks to her semifinal finish at the Monterrey Open.

Marta Kostyuk is another player who's enjoying a strong start to the season. She clinched her maiden WTA title at the ATX Open on Sunday. She's up by 12 spots to No. 40, a new career peak.

Varvara Gracheva, who lost to Kostyuk in the final, zoomed up by 22 spots to No. 66. Americans Caty McNally (No. 73) and Katie Volynets (No. 74) secured new ranking milestones for themselves as well due to their recent string of good results.

Leylah Fernandez and Camila Osorio suffer a huge fall in this week's WTA rankings

Leylah Fernandez's results since her return from an injury sustained at last year's French Open have been quite poor. The Canadian ended 2022 on a disappointing note and her start to the new season has been average at best.

Fernandez was the two-time defending champion at last week's Monterrey Open. However, she chose not to participate this year. Consequently, she slid by 17 spots to No. 49 in this week's WTA rankings.

Camila Osorio, who lost to Fernandez in the final of last year's Monterrey Open, did compete there this time around. She lost to Mayar Sherif in the first round itself. As a result, she tumbled down by 30 places to No. 100. But the tenacious Colombian is more than capable of grinding her way back to the top.
