Former World No. 1 Garbine Muguruza recently announced that she will skip the clay and grass seasons in 2023 with the aim of rebuilding her mental fitness.

Winless after four matches this season, Muguruza has been looking rusty. She hasn't competed since the WTA 250 tournament in Lyon on January 30. With things going south in recent times, the 29-year-old feels that a break from the tour is necessary to regain some mental confidence.

Taking to social media recently, Muguruza stated that she has been finding it healthy to spend time with friends and family, adding that she will hence lengthen the period with her dear ones till the summer in an effort to completely re-group.

"Hey guys what's going on. Spending time with family and friends and it's really been healthy and amazing so I am going to lengthen this period till summer, therefore I am going to miss clay and grass season. Thanks for all the lovely messages and will be updating you guys," she wrote on Instagram.

Reacting to the announcement, several fans on social media acknowledged Muguruza's decision, stating that it is important for a player to prioritize mental well-being.

"Nice to see Garbine Muguruza prioritizing her mental well being and extending her time away from the game to be around friends and family. She plans on returning this summer following the grass court season. Wish her all the best," one fan wrote in their tweet.

Meanwhile, another fan opined that the break was good for Muguruza considering how "unhappy" she was on the court in recent games.

"I think this is good for her. She was so unhappy on court so for her mental health best to take the time away to recharge and decide when and if she wants to return to a sport she once loved. Anyone watching could see how uncomfortable and unhappy she was on the court lately," they wrote.

"In tennis everything changes very quickly, this sport has no memory. One week things can go very wrong for you and the next you can win a tournament. Keeping calm is essential, being humble enough to accept the situation and keep working hard," Muguruza said.
