Serena Williams' daughter Olympia takes after her mother and shows a keen interest in sports. The six-year-old's Instagram page is dotted with pictures and videos of her trying her hand at different games. Williams has also often spoken about her daughter's athleticism and of her showing signs of being fitness-oriented.
It is no wonder that the 23-time Grand Slam champion places importance on recognizing her daughter's sporting talent early on. The Williams sisters began honing their tennis skills in their early teens, their father Richard having spotted their talents and taken them under his wing before they turned 15.
In an interview with The New York Times in June this year, Williams opened up about identifying Olympia's sporting abilities much like her father did.
"It worked out well. [Laughs] But what do I see? The 8-month-old is so tiny, but Olympia is such a bright light, and she’s so athletic, to the point where it’s just not even humanly possible. Even Venus (Williams' sister), she was like, 'That kid has more talent than you and I combined,' and she’s not lying. So, I can see how my dad may have seen some potential in us," Serena Williams said.
Here are some of the sports that Olympia has shown an interest in.
Serena Williams' daughter Olympia's sporting interests
Tennis
It is only natural for the daughter of one of tennis' greats to pick up a racket. Olympia has been in Serena Williams' player's box since she was a baby, along with father Alexis Ohanian.
According to Williams, while Olympia may have what it takes to turn pro in the future, she didn't take to the sport right away. She said on the CBS show "Person to Person with Norah O'Donnell" in September 2023:
"Olympia doesn't actually like to play tennis too much. That's a little disappointing for me, but she's actually really good at it."
Around the same time, Ohanian shared a picture on Instagram of Olympia stepping onto the court and showing off her skills, via her Instagram account.
Soccer
Olympia's interest in soccer may have come from her father's love for the game. Ohanian is also the lead investor in Angel City Football Club, a National Women's Soccer League team from Los Angeles.
In March 2023, the then-5-year-old Olympia showed off her footwork by playing with the team during practice. She was also seen in the stands cheering ACF Club on at a game in December last year, where she got a soccer ball autographed by players Lynn Williams and Alyssa Thomas.
Golf
Olympia has shown a keen interest in golf. As far back as 2022 when Olympia was 4 years old, Ohanian had shared a picture on Instagram of her holding a small golf club in a mini-golf course.
Ohanian has been accompanying Olympia during her golf practice sessions and recently shared a picture of the little southpaw taking a swing, via her Instagram account.
Interestingly, Ohanian also tagged Brittany Ferrante, who is a golf coach for kids.
While 6 may be an early age to spot the exact sporting discipline that Olympia may eventually pursue, she has certainly shown her athletic ability. With parents Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian by her side, she is sure to receive the best guidance to bring out her best.
