Elena Rybakina vs Elina Avanesyan preview

11th seed Elena Rybakina will face off against unseeded Elina Avanesyan in the first round (Round of 128) of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday, July 1.
Rybakina has had a fairly solid season, though consistency has been somewhat elusive. Her standout moment came in Strasbourg, where she clinched the title with a win over Liudmila Samsonova in the final. However, at both the Australian Open and the French Open, she fell short of expectations, reaching only the fourth round in each.
The Kazakh's grasscourt campaign began at the HSBC Championships, where she made it to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Tatjana Maria. In Berlin, she again reached the last eight but was stopped by her long-time rival Aryna Sabalenka. Now, she arrives at Wimbledon looking to build on those performances and make a deeper run.

Meanwhile, Avanesyan has found it tough to maintain consistency this season. Her standout results came at the Hobart International and the Merida Open, where she reached the semifinals in both. However, she’s struggled to make an impact at the bigger events, falling early in most.
The Armenian heads into Wimbledon with virtually no match play on grass this year, having skipped the entire lead-up swing. Her most recent outing was at the French Open, where she suffered a first-round exit.

Elena Rybakina vs Elina Avanesyan prediction
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina returns to Centre Court with a first-round clash against Elina Avanesyan. Given her pedigree on grass and current form, the Kazakh will be heavily favored to make a winning start.
Rybakina’s game is tailor-made for grass. She’s got a big serve, a flat, penetrating groundstroke game, and the calm demeanor needed to thrive under pressure. Her 2022 title run proved she knows how to handle the big moments, and if she’s anywhere near her top level, she’s a threat to go all the way again.
Avanesyan, meanwhile, is more comfortable on slower surfaces. She’s a solid baseliner and a fighter, but this matchup on grass won’t do her many favors. The speed of the court gives her opponent a clear advantage in terms of power and shot execution. Unless the Kazakh struggles physically or starts slow, it’s hard to see her getting pushed too much in this one.
That said, the Armenian will try to keep points long and force Rybakina into extended rallies, where she might make some errors. But if the No. 11 seed gets her first serve going and finds her range off the ground, she should have little trouble booking her spot in the second round.
Pick: Elena Rybakina to win in straight sets
