The ladies' singles at Wimbledon started in 1884, seven years after the men's singles. Since the initial event, there have been numerous modifications made to the women's singles rules. From 1886 to 1921, the competition began with an all-comers' singles knockout stage, in which the victor challenged the reigning champion in a challenge round. When the previous year's champion was not present, the all-comers' winner was given the title automatically eleven times (1889, 1890, 1891, 1894, 1895, 1898, 1903, 1908, 1909, 1912, 1913).

The best-of-three set format has been used for all matches since the first championships. Except for the all-comers' final and the challenge round, which were won with six games and a two-game advantage, every match between 1877 and 1883 was won by the next game at five games all. From 1884 to 1970, all sets were decided using the two-game advantage format. In 1971, the lingering death tie-break, which is played at eight games-all until 1978 and at six games-all since 1979, was adopted for the first two sets.
