Second seed Julia Georges and third seed Domnikia Cibulkova have reached the quarter finals of the WTA Barcelona Ladies Open.
No.3 seed Cibulkova came from a break down in the second set and 4-2 down in the third set to beat Czech veteran Klara Zakopalova, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
“I’ve had trouble winning those close matches this year, and I was down 4-2 in the third set today, so I’m really glad I made it,” Cibulkova commented. “I’ve been training on clay a week before the tournament and I’m feeling in good shape. I can still be much, much better, but I’m happy to be in the quarterfinals now, and I want to play a few more matches and see where I am with my form.”
Second seed Goerges beat Spanish wildcard Garbiñe Muguruza Blanco, 75 57 62. “Garbiñe is a really talented player. She’s very young with great skills, and she has all the makings to be a good player,” Goerges told the press later. “The great result at Miami is not a surprise and from now on we’ll see her at this level I’m sure.
In other matches, qualifier Yuliya Beygelzimer scored a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4 win over fifth seed Flavia Pennetta, Olga Govortsova scored a 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 6-2 victory over Laura Pous-Tio and Romanian Sorana Cirstea beat another Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino 1-6, 6-3, 6-1
