SEVENTEEN's Mingyu's recent live stream comment drew criticism over his friendship with BTS’ Jungkook. On June 7, 2025, Mingyu shared his plans for filming the dance challenge of his group's recent song THUNDER on a Weverse live session.
Notably, the Shake It Off singer is known to be a part of the popular friend circle in the South Korean music scene known as the 97-liners, along with Jungkook of BTS and GOT7’s Yugyeom. The SEVENTEEN member in his live video said:
“Dance challenge with Yugyeom? THUNDER challenge with Yugyeom? I've talked about it with him and with Jungkook as well. I'll ask him [to do it] since he'll be getting discharged from the military soon!”
However, this statement drew negative comments online, with some alleged fans claiming that Mingyu mentioned the Seven singer for attention. Some further asserted that the SEVENTEEN rapper only spoke about the BTS member because his military discharge is near.
They further made insensitive remarks about their friendship. Such comments gained fans’ attention, and they turned on X to defend their bond. A fan said:
"Some ppl gotta mind their own business, like jk is a real human too, ofc he can have friends beside bts. why are they acting like a cult sabotaging him to only love bts."
Many fans shared similar reactions on the social media platform
"'Shading his friends. They probably promise not to hype stuff 'cause I don’t see them supporting each other’s music or activities, just the occasional dance challenge. Be happy his friends are just as excited as we are," another fan commented.
"Not the crazy a** fans crying in the qrts. OMG grow up! At the end of the day, he is Jungkook’s friend and you are not. They both don't know you and I'm sure they'll wear matching outfits as always for the dance challenge so cry," a fan wrote.
Fans reminded the others that Mingyu and Jungkook have shared a close friendship for almost a decade. They further urged them to make comments within respectful boundaries.
"Ummm what are we doing like genuinely do u 'fans' not want him to have friends?? like wtf is wrong with you guys there is rlly no one who hates jungkook more than his 'fans'," a netizen mentioned.
"Don't understand why so many fans are pressed over JK having friends outside the group. JK & 97-liners have been buddies for a long time, some going as far back as 2016. It's clear they've been a steady source of happiness and support for him. Shouldn't they all be happy for him?" a fan commented.
"They've been friends for 10 years now and they've been seen hanging out in their own time why does everything have to be public with y'all, do y'all not have friends?touch grass i beg, acting like jk is being forced to be friends with him," a user stated.
SEVENTEEN's Mingyu on Hyell's Club and BTS’ Jungkook's military discharge
Mingyu, along with his boy group SEVENTEEN, completed 10 years in the industry and celebrated their debut anniversary on May 26, 2025. On June 6, the SEVENTEEN rapper appeared on Hyell's Club hosted by Lee Hye-ri. He shared what it was like to be surrounded by 12 members for over a decade while also working on music and participating in different activities.
Mingyu playfully said:
“It's really horrible. For example, I met a friend in the first grade when I entered elementary school. But even after a year, our classes didn't change, and we had to go to college together. According to the contract, I had to do it for 10 years.”
Mingyu further spoke about SEVENTEEN's bond with each other, saying:
“Actually, the more I hate them, the better I think we are on good terms. Personally, I really like the members.”
Meanwhile, on June 7, 2025, BIGHIT MUSIC issued a statement on Weverse regarding BTS members’ discharge, including Jungkook. They urged fans not to visit the site while also informing them that there would not be any special event for the same.
Jungkook is said to be relieved from his military duties with his fellow group member Jimin on June 11, 2025.
