10 best current tag teams in pro wrestling

It's a cute name, but are the Miz and Shane McMahon really the best tag team in the world?
It's a cute name, but are the Miz and Shane McMahon really the best tag team in the world?

When The Miz formed his current tag team with Shane McMahon, they started to call themselves 'the Best Tag Team in the World'. While The Miz is playing off the 'Best in the World' World Cup tournament victory of Shane McMahon, the team's name is just a name and not truly indicative of their ability as a team.

The Miz is a good wrestler but isn't exactly known as an in-ring technician. The same goes for Shane McMahon.

They are perfectly fine in their own rights, but are they really the best team in the world? I can think of at least 20 other teams worldwide that could easily stake a claim to actually being the best tag team in the world. Here are the 10 best current tag teams in the world in no particular order.

#10. SoCal Uncensored

SCU will be featured in AEW going forward instead of ROH
SCU will be featured in AEW going forward instead of ROH

Even though Kazarian and Christopher Daniels are both in their 40s, they can still go in the ring better than a lot of wrestlers 10 years younger. Adding Scorpio Sky prolonged the careers of both men and it also allowed various combinations for tag team matches while also allowing a member to pursue singles' gold.

Think the New Day to a lesser degree. Daniels is a former Ring of Honor Champion and has held tag team gold in Impact and ROH. The trio has had a big part in the ROH tag team division as both faces and heels but they will now be a fixture in All Elite Wrestling.

Their matches in Ladder Wars as well as against the Young Bucks, the Briscoes and Best Friends were among the best in ROH last year. How will the trio help build a tag team division in another promotion? While their character work currently has them as fan favourites, it's when they are heels that they really start to heat things up.

But since we are in the age of cool heels and fans cheering for them, SCU is over regardless of if they are jokingly insulting the town they are in or are serious about being in the worst town ever.

#9. The Usos

The Usos have been one of the top teams in WWE
The Usos have been one of the top teams in WWE

If you watch SmackDown or Raw, then you know that The Usos have been one of the top teams on either show. They have either been the champions or have been chasing the titles throughout their WWE tenure regardless of the show they were on.

It has been a bit frustrating when there are other tag teams on SmackDown (Sanity, the Good Brothers, etc.), but for some reason, creative only seems to value The Usos, New Day or the Bar as worthy of tag team gold.

That all changed when Shane McMahon and the Miz 'beat' the Bar to capture the SmackDown Tag Team titles. But how long will their partnership last? You have to think that the moment they lose the belts will only start a countdown as to when one member will turn on the other.

The Usos are slated to challenge "MizMahon" at Elimination Chamber and may walk into WrestleMania 35 as SmackDown tag team champions once again.

While it may be awesome for some to see them as champions again, it will be disappointing due to the lack of creativity WWE has shown with promoting the tag team division outside of the short shelf life of the Shane/Miz storyline.

#8. The War Raiders

The War Raiders won the NXT Tag Team titles in an amazing match with the Undisputed Era at Takeover: Phoenix

Rowe and Hanson might just look like a couple of guys with beards and tattoos, but once they get in the ring, you can quickly see why they are a special tag team. They don't have a combination of a small guy and a big guy or two guys who are just extremely athletic like the Bar.

What they do have is chemistry and a powerful set of moves that few teams in WWE have been able to duplicate over the last few years. Hanson is deceptively agile and quick while Rowe often surprises you with his strength and transitions.

If you watched any of there NXT tenure or even just the recent match in which they won the NXT Tag Team Titles, you'll see what I'm talking about. The duo was so good before WWE that it got them noticed. Before WWE, the War Raiders were a fixture in ROH and partially NJPW.

While they might become a dominant team as NXT Champions, here's hoping they don't go the way of Sanity, The Ascension or the Vaudevillians once called up to the main roster.

#7. Guerillas of Destiny

Tama Tonga (right) and brother Tanga Loa have anchored the NJPW Tag Team division
Tama Tonga (right) and brother Tanga Loa have anchored the NJPW Tag Team division

Tama Tonga has been with the Bullet Club since its inception. He and Bad Luck Fale are the only two original members who have stayed with NJPW. About two to three years ago, his brother, formerly known to WWE audiences as Camacho or Impact audiences as Micah, joined the group and the two brothers formed a tag team.

It's a good thing they did because they helped keep the Bullet Club afloat during the war between the Elite and the OGs as well as during the exodus of the Elite to form AEW.

Tama Tonga is a slightly more slender and quicker Roman Reigns for those who are unfamiliar with the team. Loa is the team's powerhouse and they have excelled in the IWGP Heavyweight tag team division.

Tonga is one of those wrestlers who just has 'it' and his charisma more than makes up for his brother's lack thereof. Together, they have won the tag titles four times.

They lost the IWGP Heavyweight tag team titles to another fantastic team in Evil and Sanada of Los Ingobernables de Japon at Wrestle Kingdom 13 but will likely be in the mix again some time this year.

#6. The Revival

While more successful in NXT, the Revival are a throwback to teams from the earlier stages of modern pro wrestling
While more successful in NXT, the Revival are a throwback to teams from the earlier stages of modern pro wrestling

The main appeal of a team like The Revival is that they remind older fans of tag teams like the Brain Busters and the Midnight Express from the 80s and 90s. They excel on ring psychology and opportunistic natures whereas a lot of the other tag teams on this list rely on high-flying spots and exciting moves.

While they have struggled to gain traction on the main roster due to untimely injuries, poor booking and a lack of faith by creative, they were one of the best teams in NXT history.

For proof of that, watch any of their matches with DIY, AOP or American Alpha. Their matches were just as good as the current tag teams in NXT and is probably why a lot of fans have been disappointed with how they've been handled on the main roster.

Things appear to be turning around for the duo as they have a title shot in their pockets after winning a four corners tag match on last week's Raw.

Will something come of that win since they have expressed their frustration with their spot in WWE or will it just be short-term appeasement by management?

#5. The New Day

The New Day has been at the top of divisions on both Raw and SmackDown Live
The New Day has been at the top of divisions on both Raw and SmackDown Live

The New Day has been a mainstay in the tag team main event scene of both Raw and SmackDown Live. While they've done almost all they could as a team, they may need a slight change in the near future in order to stay fresh.

One way that puts the New Day near the top of the tag teams in the world is not only their in-ring chemistry but also their ability on the mic. If they aren't in a match, it's okay because if they have a promo, it's likely to be just as entertaining as one of their matches.

While I prefer the pairing of Big E and Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods has held his own when paired with both members. His inclusion in the group appeared to allow the other members to open up and show more personality than they had before.

Another huge reason that they have been successful in WWE is that they are marketing gurus. From the pancakes to the unicorn horns to their colourful attire, the New Day has a hold on WWE that will only lighten up if their act is negatively altered.

#4. The Young Bucks

The Young Bucks are arguably the best tag team not currently in WWE
The Young Bucks are arguably the best tag team not currently in WWE

Some people think they are the best tag team in the world while others will disagree. It likely depends on if you watch more than just WWE and/or which style you prefer.

The Young Bucks are high-flyers with a great move set but who also bring out technical moves and submissions like a Sharpshooter. They might not be taken as seriously because they are both about the size of Chad Gable, but that doesn't mean they aren't an amazing team.

Matches with the Briscoes, the Hardys, Best Friends, SCU and reDRragon are only just the tip of the iceberg regarding the impact the brothers have had on tag-team wrestling. They've also excelled in Trios action, holding both the NJPW and ROH 6-man Tag Team Titles on six separate occasions.

The brothers are seven-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions and are poster boys for self-promotion and merchandising so much so that they didn't need to go to WWE for the money.

Putting on All In also upped their stock and it ultimately led to the creation of All Elite Wrestling. While they may use the super-kick a little too much, they are great in every aspect of the sport from selling to completing dangerous spots to pulling off combo moves like the Meltzer Driver.

#3. LAX

Any promotion would be lucky to have this version of LAX on its roster.
Any promotion would be lucky to have this version of LAX on its roster.

Depending on when you watched TNA/Impact (or if you did), your definition of just which team is really LAX might vary. While Homicide and Hernandez were the original duo, the current duo is a lot more exciting and has had some pretty amazing matches.

Their bouts with the Lucha Brothers have routinely stolen the show and have even had some match of the year quality about them. Not to mention the singles' match between Santana and Fenix.

The current duo confirmed their claim to the name LAX after defeating Hernandez and Homicide in their feud. It helped carry Impact's tag team division and also helped integrate stars Pentagon Jr. and Fenix into the company.

They did recently lose the tag titles to the aforementioned Lucha Brothers but wherever they wrestle, they will be one of the top teams.

#2. The Lucha Brothers

Will the Lucha Brothers join WWE at some point in the future?
Will the Lucha Brothers join WWE at some point in the future?

Whether as singles' wrestlers or as a tag team, the duo of brothers Pentagon Jr. and Fenix are among the most exciting wrestlers in the world. They were mainly kept apart as singles' wrestlers in Lucha Underground where each man established himself as one of the best wrestlers in the company.

Pentagon Jr. and Fenix each had runs as Lucha Underground Champion whereas Pentagon had a short run as the Impact World Champ. As a duo, though, they've captured the tag team titles in both Major League Wrestling as well as Impact.

Their insane matches with the likes of LAX and teams like the Hart Foundation and LA Park and El Hijo De LA Park have been fun to watch. While they primarily integrate their singles' moves into their tag matches, the way the matches flow with the moves makes the whole situation fluid.

Sometimes moves don't seem to fit into the structure of a match, but when the Package Piledriver finisher is followed by Fenix's stomp off the top rope, it seems more effective. The Lucha Brothers have been in demand all over the world with Impact, WWE and AEW all vying for their services.

They were thought to be WWE-bound, but the LU contract apparently constricted where they could wrestle. It hasn't stopped them from continuing to appear for Impact, MLW and now All Elite Wrestling.

The Bucks and Lucha Brothers will likely square off at Double or Nothing in order to prove just which team is really the best in the world.

#1. The Undisputed Era

While no longer NXT Tag champs, the Undisputed Era is perhaps the best tag team under WWE's umbrella.
While no longer NXT Tag champs, the Undisputed Era is perhaps the best tag team under WWE's umbrella.

While Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly were a great tag team as both reDRagon and the initial tag team of the Undisputed Era, something about Roderick Strong just seems to put the team on another level.

Fish's injury was actually a benefit for the team because Strong is younger, quicker and more explosive (in my opinion). Strong was already doing well as a singles' star in both ROH and NXT but his turn on Pete Dunne in order to join the Undisputed Era just upped his stock.

They did recently drop the belts to the War Raiders, but you have to think they are destined for bigger things in the second half of 2019. Adam Cole stated that they'd all be holding gold in 2019, but he didn't mean specifically in NXT. Could the faction debut after WrestleMania in the annual Superstar Shake Up?

Adding them would change the landscape of WWE if booked properly and not fed to someone like John Cena. If you need any proof of their greatness, pick from any of the matches they've had with Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch, the War Raiders, AOP, WarGames and Mustache Mountain.

Just think of the matches they'd be able to have with the likes of the Revival, the Usos, the New Day and others.

Honourable Mention

While they are both currently singles' champs, DIY was one of the best tag teams in the world when they were together.
While they are both currently singles' champs, DIY was one of the best tag teams in the world when they were together.

There are still several great tag teams in the world. Teams like DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) would have easily been one of the top teams in the world were they still together.

They had amazing matches with the likes of the Undisputed Era, AOP and the Revival. Many of their bouts were 'match of the year' candidates. Were they a team at the moment, they'd be on this list.

Evil and Sanada are a great team and the main tag team of LIJ. They are the current IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team champions.

Sanada is one of the best wrestlers in the world and was mishandled during his run in TNA/Impact.

The Bar is a great team due to the chemistry between Sheamus and Cesaro. They've held tag gold five separate times and have had fantastic matches with both the New Day and the Usos.

While they reunited for about a year, the Golden Lovers were an exciting combination of Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi. Both were incredibly successful as singles' stars, so the run was short-lived.

That didn't mean their matches, including one with the Young Bucks, weren't a testament to tag team wrestling.
