Back at the end of 2017, the WWE aired a promo on an episode of Raw for the return of former NXT Champion, Sami Zayn.

Since then, however, mention of Zayn has faded away, and with the Royal Rumble now having come and gone, it remains unclear as to when exactly we will be seeing him step back between the ropes.

Zayn is one of the WWE's most under-utilised performers, and the company need to get his return right to help wipe the slate clean for the Canadian following what was an awful program with Bobby Lashley mid-way through 2018.

With that in mind, let's take a look at five feuds Sami Zayn could have when he finally returns to the WWE.

#5: Dean Ambrose

Dean Ambrose is on his way out of the WWE at the end of his current contract, and if the WWE is smart, they will try to utilise him to help get other talents over on his way out.

On the current roster, there are few superstars who could do with a big feud and victory more than Sami Zayn. Zayn has quickly become one of the company's nearly men in recent years, and having him return with a big victory over one of the WWE's most consistent main event performers could work wonders for him going forward.

This would also feel like a fresh feud and could give Zayn the opportunity to re-establish his old face character that made him so popular in the first place.

#4: Drew McIntyre

While it is highly likely that Sami Zayn would come out on the losing end of a feud with Drew McIntyre, an extended period of fighting between the pair could turn out to be mutually beneficial for both parties.

Zayn originally got over as the biggest underdog in the WWE, and for him to have any real success going forward, the company need to find a way to tap back into that.

Having him feud with McIntyre allows him the opportunity to do that, and it also allows McIntyre, who himself has lost some momentum in recent weeks, the chance to remind fans what an excellent performer he is between the ropes.

#3: Kurt Angle

Kurt Angle's days in the ring in the numbered and it would appear as though his current storyline is heading towards his retirement in the near future.

Choosing Angle's final opponent is tricky. In his heyday, Angle was one of the best wrestlers on the planet, and given the right opponent, there is no doubt that he could put on one last classic on his way out.

With that in mind, Zayn could turn out to be a perfect choice. Zayn is one of the company's most capable in-ring performers and is more than capable of carrying a veteran like Angle to an excellent encounter.

The WWE even have the option of playing this off as a heel vs face dynamic, with Zayn returning as the same character who left, or a face vs face one, with Zayn challenging Angle out of respect.

#2: Daniel Bryan

As things stand, Daniel Bryan has no clear challenger for his WWE Championship at WrestleMania. While many fans are hoping that Kofi Kingston will now be the man to challenge Bryan, it seems more likely that the WWE will relegate him back down the card after his match at Fastlane.

Bryan has spent years of his career working as the ultimate underdog, and having Zayn come in under the same role and taking his title from him could be seen as a passing of the torch moment.

Of course, Sami Zayn is currently a Raw wrestler but the WWE has shown they are willing to play fast and loose with these rules in recent weeks.

Zayn could also be perfectly cast as the everyday guy against Bryan's current self-righteous heel gimmick.

#1: Finn Balor

Perhaps the most obvious choice for any heel working on Raw right now, Finn Balor's recent Intercontinental Championship victory provides the potential for several interesting feuds in the coming months.

Balor and Zayn are two of the most accomplished in-ring performers in the WWE right now, and an extended program between both men could help both of their stocks rise.

In terms of set-up, this one is also the simplest, all that would have to happen is that Zayn would have to return with the same gimmick he left with and make himself a nuisance until he earned an Intercontinental Title shot.
