5 of the best WWE promos in recent times

For any successful feud to reach its natural conclusion, it needs to be decided on a PPV. But even that would not be possible unless there is a great promo to sell it. Over the years, we have seen some of the best promos you will ever see, from legends like Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Jake Roberts to Steve Austin, Rock and Edge. While it would never be possible to name 5 of the best, considering there are so many good ones, here are a few of the best in recent times in the WWE.

Pipebomb

This was a very obvious choice, so let’s get it out of the way. This was what made CM Punk, this was what made CM Punk finally get over with the fans, which is a shame really, considering he’s a fantastic wrestler inside the ring.

The story goes that CM Punk was really frustrated with his position in the WWE and wanted to really leave. So it was decided that he would be given the mic and let him talk about how he really felt. It was a big success, even to the point where his mic was switched off while he was talking about the McMahon family.

CM Punk skyrocketed after this promo, and hasn’t looked back ever since, while the promo itself is looked at as one of the defining moments of the PG Era.

Greatness, Dignity, Respect, Courage

This was a WrestleMania 21 match between John Cena and the WWE Champion JBL.

John Cena was the number 1 contender for the WWE title and both characters were as opposite as can be. JBL was the millionaire wrestler, who looked down at people with no money, always cocky. John Cena was the ostentatious common man, whom JBL despised.

The feud between them was epic, with even a bloody “I Quit” match, which was perhaps John Cena’s greatest matches in his career.

Career threatening match

This was a classic even before the match took place, and almost everyone knew that.

The match was between Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels, and the stipulation was that if Flair lost the match, it would be the end of his career in the ring.

In the back story, Vince McMahon set down the law that Ric Flair’s career was over, and the next match that he lost would mean his career was over. Ric Flair wanted a WrestleMania match with Mr. WrestleMania himself, Shawn Michaels. But initially Shawn declined saying that he didn’t want to be the one that ended Flair’s career.

With all due respect!

This was a match between 2 icons of the Attitude Era. And so the promo had to be special!

Stone Cold Steve Austin won the Royal Rumble to earn a spot in the WrestleMania 17 main event, while the Rock beat Kurt Angle to become the reigning WWF champion.

To add a further twist, Vince McMahon forced Austin’s wife Debra to be the Rock’s manager.

My career is over!

This is, by far, the best promo I have ever seen.

Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker had one of the best WrestleMania matches in 2009, and even won the match of the year award. And there was only one way to top it – a rematch!

Shawn threw a challenge for a rematch but the Undertaker refused. But Shawn got in his way, costing the phenom the title. He finally accepted, with the stipulation that if Shawn lost, it would be the end of his career.

Watch this fantastic promo!
