5 potential WrestleMania matches for John Cena

John Cena
John Cena’s WM33 opponent remains unknown

When you've got one of the biggest superstars of all time going into potentially his last WrestleMania as a full-timer, you need something big for him.

It's been nearly two years since John Cena had an actual match on the grandest stage of them all, and heading into WrestleMania 33 there's a number of possibilities regarding his opponent in Orlando.

We're at the point now where facing John Cena at Mania is going to be a main event match, but with this being the most unpredictable card in years there's still so much to take into consideration.

After the Royal Rumble on Sunday the picture will become a lot clearer, but for now, things are still a little bit blurry as we attempt to navigate our way to the Citrus Bowl.

This feeling is certainly a fresh and exciting one, but it's also laced with a touch of fear regarding how fresh the match that John's going to have will be.

Don't get us wrong, we'll probably enjoy his performance no matter who the opponent is but this event is shaping up to feel pretty special so we need to see something extravagant to warrant Big Match John's status in the company.

With that being said, let's take a look at five potential WrestleMania matches for the Doctor of Thuganomics himself.

#5 Baron Corbin

Baron Corbin
Is Corbin ready for a match of this magnitude?

We know what you're thinking - we've literally just seen this match. Corbin vs Cena already took place on a recent episode of SmackDown, with the WWE seemingly testing the waters for a potential feud between the two at some point in the future.

Corbin more than held his own, but Cena, as he usually does, came out on top with WWE Champion AJ Styles watching on from ringside.

Now when you consider the possibility of this, it isn't too hard to fathom. Corbin could interfere in the WWE title match in order to make a name for himself, which then leads to Cena costing him his chance at winning the Rumble later on in the night.

The story writes itself and whilst there are more appealing matches on this list, you can't deny that it would be a great star-making moment for The Lone Wolf.

Speaking of "we've just seen it", onto the next entrant.

#4 AJ Styles

AJ Styles
We’ll never get tired of seeing Styles vs Cena

The Phenomenal One AJ Styles is set to square off against John Cena at the Royal Rumble this Sunday, which may leave people confused as to why he's on this list.

Well, to put it simply, the Road to WrestleMania is a long one and given that we have the Elimination Chamber placed bang in the middle of it there's a good chance we'll see some twists and turns from now until that night in Orlando.

Styles demanding a rematch at the showcase of the immortals would be a logical move, however, he could also win the championship back inside the Chamber which means that Cena will be the one cashing in his rematch clause.

Either way, it's a possibility and it would be a great way to put the exclamation mark on their feud that began all the way back in the summer of 2016.

We move onto yet another former TNA legend.

#3 Kurt Angle

Kurt Angle
It started with Angle, and it should end with the same man

Fifteen years ago John Cena had his first televised match in the WWE on SmackDown against none other than Kurt Angle. The veteran picked up the victory, but since that day there's always been some unfinished business between the two.

A lot of fans will want Angle to work with an upcoming star, but seeing these two face off at WrestleMania would certainly feel like a star-studded moment.

Plus, the match would probably be great. Kurt definitely has one great last bout left in him, and you can always rely on Cena to pull out a big performance when it matters the most.

If rumours are to be believed then Vince is struggling for ideas when it comes to Cena at WM33 anyway, so this would be a perfect solution to his problems.

Let's stick with the TNA theme as we move onto the next entry.

#2 Samoa Joe

Samoa Joe
Joe’s introduction to the main roster needs to feel big

In case you didn't know, Samoa Joe and John Cena actually trained together in California back in the day. They'd go to the gym, hang out, and Cena even went around to Joe's house on a number of occasions.

If that in itself isn't enough to convince you that they can create a great feud together, then nothing is. In terms of options, Joe vs Cena is one of the best that the WWE has right now.

The promos between the two would be fantastic, the in-ring work would be stellar and their staredown alone would be worth the price of admission.

Joe is one of the most intimidating figures in the history of the business due to his facial expressions alone, and the history these two men have together would provide the perfect blueprint for a money making match at the biggest event of the year.

We conclude with the one man that has eluded John for so long.

#1 The Undertaker

The Undertaker
Taker is the last dream match remaining

Because of course, it just had to be. The Undertaker vs John Cena is the biggest dream match left in the WWE and now, right now, is the time to capitalise on it.

Let's not wait twelve more months and let's not beat around the bush any longer, because The Deadman doesn't have much time left in his legendary career and the company need to pull the trigger on this bout sooner rather than later.

These are two icons from two completely different eras of WWE's history, and they could paint the perfect masterpiece together.

Whether you go down the route of a Cena heel turn or keep it simple and have a straight up match, it would be extremely hard for WWE to mess this up because it's essentially a golden ticket to success that's been handed to them. As Bruce Buffer would say - it's time.
