5 Things WWE SmackDown got right this week (Sept. 4, 2020)

Is there a bigger storyline brewing on WWE SmackDown?
Is there a bigger storyline brewing on WWE SmackDown?

Friday's episode of WWE SmackDown after Payback was set to crown the first number one contender to Roman Reigns' WWE Universal Championship. The Universal Champion kicked off the show and made an impact with Paul Heyman by his side, easily establishing himself as the biggest heel on SmackDown after he delivered just a few Spears and words.

Heavy Machinery took on The Miz and John Morrison and the fight ended as expected. However, the match between the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions and The Golden Role Models ended unexpectedly, leaving many in the WWE Universe in utter shock.

Bray Wyatt got the fans excited after he made a big announcement, while Big E had to be replaced in the Fatal Four-Way match set for the main event. That wasn’t all, as the Intercontinental Champions came face to face to signal a big clash somewhere down the line.

Let's look at the five things WWE SmackDown got right on this week’s show.

#5. WWE teases a change of plans for the Money in the Bank briefcase on SmackDown

The Miz and John Morrison were in action as the former WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions competed against Heavy Machinery. Both teams squared off with a possible chance of reaching the SmackDown Tag Team Championship picture as Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro seem to have no real opponents at the moment.

While the two big babyfaces built momentum early on, Miz and Morrison managed to isolate Tucker and take the fight back to Heavy Machinery.

Otis managed to spark a comeback. He took out both the heels as Michael Cole and Corey Graves continued to make humorous remarks regarding the big man.

After dishing out some punishment to the duo, Otis was able to put Miz away to pick up yet another victory on SmackDown.

After the match, Morrison surprisingly grabbed the Money in the Bank briefcase and took off with it. The commentary team reminded the WWE Universe that possession is nine-tenths of the law in an attempt to tell the fans that this could lead towards a bigger story.

While Otis has had a good run, it seems like he is slowly losing his flare as Mr. Money in the Bank. With Roman Reigns as champion, it seems unlikely that he will be able to have a successful cash-in any time soon.

While Morrison got his hands on the wrong briefcase this week, he could eventually take Otis' contract in the coming weeks and try to cash it in himself.

#4. Bray Wyatt makes a big announcement for the Firefly Fun House on WWE SmackDown

Bray Wyatt appeared on another episode of the Firefly Fun House this week on WWE SmackDown and touched upon various topics. The funhouse host got the WWE Universe excited about was the prospect of a new member joining the Firefly Fun House.

In recent months, we’ve seen Alexa Bliss appear along with The Fiend. The former RAW Women’s Champion has also going through a change in appearance and character.

However, adding Bliss to the Firefly Fun House would be too obvious, and creative may want to pull off a swerve come next week. Someone like Chelsea Green or even Bo Dallas could return to our television screens and pair up with Wyatt.

After his loss to Roman Reigns during the Triple Threat Match at WWE Payback, it looks like the company isn't ready to give The Fiend a long championship reign. In that case, this storyline could work well as The Fiend could slowly prepare an army and try to take over WWE SmackDown, especially with RETRIBUTION now only appearing on WWE RAW.

#3. A possible dream match for WWE Clash of Champion starts taking shape on SmackDown

Sami Zayn made his way to the SmackDown ring this week and didn't appreciate that the ring announcer didn't introduce him as the Intercontinental Champion. Zayn was the Intercontinental Champion before the pandemic forced him to take some time off. The tournament and matches that followed allowed WWE to crown a new Intercontinental Champion on SmackDown.

The current Intercontinental Champion, Jeff Hardy, made his way out to interrupt "The Critic of Critics" and former Intercontinental Champion, AJ Styles, followed.

All three men had a war of words. Afterward, a brawl ensued and Zayn managed to stay on top at the end of the segment after delivering a big Helluva Kick.

While the segment wasn’t great, the events allowed the fans to prepare for a great Triple Threat Match that could take place as early as WWE Clash of Champions. Although two men are holding the Intercontinental Championships, Styles believes that he’s still in the race to win back the title. WWE could book a Triple Threat match to crown one single champion at the next pay-per-view event.

All three men are great at what they do in the ring, and their varied style could contribute a show-stopping match in a couple of weeks.

#2. WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley turns on Sasha Banks

Sasha Banks and WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, Bayley, had a chance to reclaim the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships from Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax this week.

Both women seemed ready for the challenge. The Golden Role Models came in with a better plan this time around to try to take the two dominant women out. However, the Champions used their power to dominate the challengers early on.

Later, Banks and Bayley worked together to eliminate Jax for some time and work on Baszler until Banks injured her knee after she missed a double-knee strike.

Baszler didn't miss the opportunity to target Banks’ knee. Afterward, Jax made it back into the contest and delivered a crossbody to both opponents to take the match and retain the titles.

After the match, Bayley snapped and attacked Banks relentlessly to make a big statement, possibly turning Banks babyface in the process.

While many in the WWE Universe expected The Boss to turn on Bayley and go for her SmackDown Women’s Championship, it’s interesting that the company went the other way around. Banks doesn't hold a title at the moment so she could make a good underdog in this storyline.

#1. Jey Uso prepares to take flight against his cousin following WWE SmackDown

During this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown, Sheamus attacked Big E backstage and took the powerhouse down, laying him out in the parking lot. This left a place in the Fatal Four-Way match to crown the number one contender to Roman Reigns’ WWE Universal Championship open. Apparently, Paul Heyman suggested that Jey Uso replace Big E.

Sheamus, Matt Riddle, and King Corbin geared up as Uso returned to the SmackDown ring for the first time since May. The action was hot right from the opening bell as all four men went after each other to get a headstart.

While Sheamus and Riddle seemed to be the favorites to win the contest, Jey managed to finish off The King of Bros with a big splash to take the victory.

After the match, Jey cut a promo to remind that WWE Universe that the cousins will be competing for the Universal Championship at WWE Clash of Champions.

While Big E was the best pick among the lot, WWE did the right thing by pulling him out of the contest and saving his rise for a later date. Jey is an impressive athlete, and he too deserves big opportunities like everyone else.

Having Jey compete with his cousin will allow WWE to tell a greater story, and possibly even prolong the rivalry while Reigns generates more. Also, a loss wouldn't hurt the former WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champion's image.
