At Night of Champions 2014, Seth Rollins attacked Cena and cost him the WWE title against Brock Lesnar. Thereafter, on the 27th November episode of RAW the 'Authority' headed by both Stephanie McMahon and Triple H asked Cena to join the alliance. Cena rejected the offer. This resulted in a 5 on 5 traditional tag team elimination match of the survivor series between team Cena and Authority. Though Cena was eliminated (as Big Show turned on Cena), his team won the match.

As per the stipulations, the Authority was stripped of power and only Cena could bring them back. At the TLC PPV, Cena won against Seth Rollins to keep his number one contender spot intact for the WWE Championship. However, on December 29th, 2014 episode of RAW, Cena was forced to bring back the Authority as his friend Edge was taken hostage by Rollins and Big Show. This caused Seth to compete against Cena and Lesnar at Royal Rumble for the Championship and the Authority fired Ryback, Eric Rowan, and Dolph Ziggler. On 19th January's RAW, Cena won a handicap match against Rollins, Big Show and Kane and was successful in rehiring the three fired wrestlers and also his spot at Royal Rumble.

At Royal Rumble, Cena though could not win, but it ended the rivalry between them.
