#2 Edge vs Chris Benoit: Backlash 2005

Prior to WrestleMania 21, Edge and Chris Benoit began to engage in a feud that fans would have likely thought concluded in a singles match at WrestleMania 21. On the other hand, WWE had other plans as they implemented the inaugural Money in the Bank ladder match with both men being key participants.

During the Money in the Bank ladder match at the Showcase of the Immortals, the Rated-R Superstar swung a chair at Benoit's bad arm, which caused him to tumble off the ladder. As a result, Edge won the first ever Money in the Bank ladder match at Benoit's expense.

The following night on Raw, the Rabid Wolverine picked up a victory over the newly crowned "Mr. Money in the Bank" with a shocking roll-up, which caused a rift with Edge. Eric Bischoff later sanctioned a Last Man Standing match for Backlash, where both men would have to beat each other to a pulp to gain the victory.

The war at Backlash began fast as the former World Heavyweight Champion ran into the ring and took down Edge right from the get-go. During the match, the two Canadians hit each other with everything they had; for example, the Canadian Crippler went for a middle-roped dive and was hit over the head with a trash can lid.

In addition, Chris Benoit hit Edge with a German Suplex from the top of the ladder, and then executed a Diving Headbutt to nearly win the match. In the end, Edge proved to be the Ultimate Opportunist by hitting a couple of Spears, and using a brick that he hid in the Money in the Bank contract to keep The Rabid Wolverine down for the ten count.

The match had all of the innovation and storytelling you could expect from a blood feud, as Benoit would not stay down.
