On WWE No Way Out 2009, Edge had to defend the WWE Championship inside the Elimination Chamber. He defended his championship against Jeff Hardy, Triple H, The Undertaker, Big Show, and Vladimir Kozlov.

The Ultimate Opportunist knew that he was at a big disadvantage due to the fact that he was obligated to defend the WWE Championship against five other competitors. Four of his opponents were former WWE Champions as well. Edge was also one of the first entrants inside the chamber, along with Hardy. Both Edge and Hardy were rivals at that point in time.

Within the first three minutes of the match, Hardy rolled-up Edge and eliminated him. Edge's elimination marked the first time in which the defending champion was the first competitor eliminated inside the Elimination Chamber.

After Edge was the first competitor to be eliminated from the match, it was guaranteed that a new WWE Champion would be crowned.

It was certainly humiliating for Edge to lose his WWE Championship in the aforementioned manner. However, he would redeem himself later during the same pay-per-view.
