What actually transpired, was far more unpredictable and brilliant.

After John Cena had barely survived the Elimination Chamber in January 2006, Edge struck, with fans being reminded in shocking fashion that 'cashing in anytime', really meant any time. Edge won the WWE Championship for the first time in his illustrious career, announcing his arrival to the main event level in WWE.

The original Mr. Money in the Bank would be synonymous with the MITB concept, winning the briefcase again in 2007 from Mr. Kennedy. This time around, Edge wouldn't dilly-dally, cashing in days later on a downed and bloodied Undertaker. Edge laid the foundation for cash-ins, defining MITB for years to come.
