5 WWE superstars who could be contenders for the SmackDown Championship

The champ

With the brand split coming up, the WWE fans are collectively wondering about the possibility of WWE bringing in a second main event championship. The rumors suggest that WWE is going to have a Raw Championship and a SmackDown championship after the brand split.

While it is not clear which all superstars will be falling into each of the brands, it would be easy to speculate on who is the best candidate to carry the second championship.

This is because, the likes of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose are currently involved in the WWE championship picture so any one of these three is likely to stay on Raw with this title. Which raises the question about SmackDown champion; here are five superstars we think should win the title if it is introduced.

Bray Wyatt

Deserves a title by now

Am I the only one that wonders why WWE has not allowed Bray Wyatt to win a singles title yet? Maybe I am, maybe I’m not, but one thing is for sure, Bray Wyatt has the caliber to hold a title. He has been around for a few years now and most of his feuds have been notable as well.

WWE can capitalize on the Wyatt family during the brand split and make them a force to reckon with in one of the brands.

If Bray holds the major championship of SmackDown and is protected by his family members at all corners, any match that he gets involved in will be an intriguing one as the challenger will be fighting against stacked odds.

Randy Orton

Randy needs momentum before Lesnar showdown

WWE made a huge step this week when they announced Randy Orton as the opponent of Brock Lesnar. The fact that Orton is announced without no buildup whatsoever makes it’s a confusing choice but at the same time, it is a match that we all wanted to see. And after all, WWE does some weird things when it involves Lesnar.

The Lesnar vs. Orton showdown will take place after the brand split, which means that WWE will have a SmackDown championship by then if they are planning to introduce it.

Making Orton the champion is a great way to make him look strong ahead of the Lesnar match because, if Orton simply walks into the match, it gives an impression that he has no momentum on his side against the Beast.

Kevin Owens

Owens is a perfect heel champion

Kevin Owens is a wrestler that has performed beyond expectations. Ever since he made his debut in WWE, Owens has been on the rise. Despite being one of the most entertaining performers on the whole WWE roster, Owens is yet to get his rub with the major WWE championship.

Just like most of the cases in this list, Owens is likely to get an elevated status on the roster.

This presents WWE with the best opportunity to make Owens a main event level champion. Owens is probably the best heel performer that WWE has right now and if they are planning to have a heel champion, Owens should be the first pick.

AJ Styles

#BeatupJohnCena

The Debut of AJ Styles in WWE was delayed big time. Now that he is finally here, WWE should need to fast forward their booking with him. AJ might only stick around for a couple of years before hanging up his boots and he needs to have some WWE championship runs under his resume before that.

AJ is a main event level star and with the experience he holds, he could easily be the face of a brand.

AJ has held all the major titles around the world and him winning a main-event level championship in WWE will break the internet. In fact, WWE could even have a high profile feud between Cena and Styles for the title.

John Cena

Sweet 16 is waiting

It’s been a long time since John Cena started his wait to equal the record of Ric Flair. Cena needs a major championship to conquer this record but at the same time, he has been kept away from the main event scene for quite some time now.

But with the brand split coming in, WWE will have to elevate John Cena back to the main event status.

Cena is a big draw and making him the champion at SmackDown will be the best move to boost the show. SmackDown needs someone like him to create the buzz and Cena winning his 16th title will redefine the word buzz for the brand.
