On the road to WrestleMania 22, John Cena teamed up with Maria to take on Edge and Lita on an episode of WWE RAW, with Mick Foley acting as special guest referee. The match ended with the babyfaces bagging a victory, much to the chagrin of The Rated-R Superstar. Edge and Lita launched an attack on Foley after the match, and an intense rivalry kicked off between the two men.
The feud culminated in a Hardcore match at WrestleMania. Edge speared Foley in the early moments of the match, resulting in a bruised and bloodied shoulder. Foley revealed that he had some barbed wire hidden inside his shirt. The brutal contest went on, with both Superstars doing everything they could to take down the other. With nothing working against the determined Foley, Edge decided to cross the line, and Lita put a table on fire at ringside. Edge speared Foley through the burning table in one of the scariest visuals in WWE history, leaving fans aghast. Moments later, a shivering Edge pinned Foley to win the match.

He would book Roman Reigns to re-form The Bloodline with The Usos and Sami Zayn upon his comeback. The angle would see The Tribal Chief-led group go head-to-head with The Rock, Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, and Jacob Fatu in a blockbuster family feud.
