Chris Jericho is arguably one of the greatest of all time. The man at 48 years of age has produced some of the greatest matches of his career in the last year. 5 star matches against Kenny Omega and Tetsuya Naito though doesn't seem to be enough for the Canadian superstar.
A few weeks ago, the Alpha of professional wrestling surprised everyone once again by signing a 3 year deal with AEW. All Elite Wrestling has still months to go till their first pay per view called Double or Nothing, plus they are currently with no TV deal. That didn't stop Jericho though from roasting Brock Lesnar during the 2019 Royal Rumble pay per view, teasing us for a possible match.
In a since-deleted tweet Jericho said the following:
Intimidation and fear goes a LONG way in our business guys. But let’s be honest, @BrockLesnar needs to pull up his pants and lose the gut… the dream is over dude. I don’t play by the script… @wwe @AEWrestling
Let's assume that AEW will be a wrestling driven company and let's say that they sign Brock Lesnar to a deal. With that said, I have my doubts as to where Brock Lesnar will fit in a promotion where the storyline will be told in the ring. Lesnar and Jericho have met before on RAW in a squash segment and not in a serious one on one match.
The match makes sense as Brock has worked his best matches the past two years with smaller guys like AJ Styles and Finn Balor. Guys like Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman are not in ring generals. In order to bring Brock Lesnar to a great match you have to be able to access the situation and adapt your in-ring style at any given time.
That's what we are looking for here. Chris might be older and slower in the ring,but he can still command and bring a big man like Brock to a great match. Jericho, on the other hand makes waves on the indies as a legend of the sport. His stock is the highest it's ever been. He has reinvented himself so many times that it's humanly impossible to resist at his charm and love for professional wrestling.
In the end what makes Brock Lesnar vs Chris Jericho a must see match is the dynamic of a legend of the business vs the greatest box office attraction in the business. It all comes down to money and if Tony Khan will take his time to build a brand with the assist of Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks or if he pulls a WCW and spends enormous amounts of money to bring huge stars to his company.
Nevertheless, competition will bring the best out of both companies. If this match takes place outside of the WWE umbrella though, it would be massive for AEW and a strong message that they are here to stay.
