16-time World Champion John Cena will return to WWE early next year to begin his retirement tour. The Franchise Player made this announcement during this year's Money in the Bank PLE, and since then the WWE Universe has been looking forward to what will they witness in Cena's last run.
While there are many angles and rivalries Cena can be booked in next year, it seems the promotion already has a feud set for him. That's probably the reason they booked a 26-year-old superstar to become champion. The star in question is Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker.
Throughout his professional wrestling career in WWE, John Cena has won several titles and broken many records. However, the 16-time World Champion is not a Grand Slam Champion because he has never managed to win the Intercontinental Championship.
The reason why WWE probably booked Bron Breakker to become champion is because the promotion is most likely looking at a feud between Breakker and Cena. Since Breakker is young and currently in demand, he could reign until the Leader of Cenation returns next year.

However, when John Cena comes back for his retirement tour next year, he could first appear on RAW and challenge Bron Breakker for the Intercontinental Championship. This way Cena could become Grand Slam Champion as losing to him won't hurt Breakker and he will only learn more from the experience.
Major AEW star recently said wrestling John Cena was always interesting
In his professional wrestling career, John Cena has faced some of the biggest names in this business. Along with these names, Cena has given the WWE Universe some memorable moments and matches. One such superstar he has shared history with is AEW star Bryan Danielson.
During a recent appearance on talkSPORT, Danielson spoke about the experience of wrestling the 16-time World Champion. The AEW star said wrestling Cena was always interesting because the crowd would react vociferously to the 16-time World Champion.
"Wrestling John was always interesting because the fans react so vociferously with him. Like both positive and negative. There are people who love him and people who hate him and they react back and forth. To that point, that was my favorite match that I had in WWE....It was a really cool moment in my career," Danielson said. [13:33 - 14:22]
Back when Danielson was Daniel Bryan in WWE, he and Cena faced each other on multiple occasions. However, the duo also teamed up plenty of times, and that too garnered a good response from the crowd.
