Alberto Del Rio may be on his way back to WWE

What's the story?

After it was rumoured last night that Vince McMahon was interested in bringing Alberto Del Rio back to WWE, PWInsider have reported today that the former World Champion recently visited WWE Headquarters at Stamford, Connecticut last week for some filming and to meet Mr. McMahon.

In case you didn't know...

Alberto Del Rio is a former World Champion in WWE, but both of his spells with the company ended in controversy - being fired back in 2014 when he slapped an employee for making a racist joke and walking away from the company in 2016 rather than try to negotiate a new deal while sitting out a 30-day suspension.

Del Rio was a massive star during his first run when he won the only 40-man Royal Rumble Match in WWE history, and his second spell got off to an incredible start too, when he answered John Cena's Open Challenge for the United States Championship at Hell in a Cell 2015 and beat Cena for the championship.

Del Rio's last involvement with WWE came in the summer of 2016 when he and then-girlfriend Paige were suspended for violating WWE's Wellness Policy and, after a year of scandal, the Mexican star has now found his feet again - working with Impact Wrestling under the name Alberto El Patron.

The heart of the matter

It was rumoured yesterday that the former WWE, AAA and Impact Wrestling Champion had a huge fan in Vince McMahon, and the boss was interested in bringing Del Rio back to the company. PW Insider has now reported that Alberto Del Rio was indeed present at WWE HQ in Stamford, Connecticut, last week.

The reason for the visit, which took place last Wednesday, was apparently to film interview material for an upcoming WWE project related to another rumoured returning Superstar, Rey Mysterio.

PW Insider reported that the Impact Wrestling star also met with Vince McMahon during his visit.

What's next?

Alberto El Patron's current contract with Impact Wrestling expires next month, but it's rumoured the two parties have met to negotiate a deal. But when WWE come calling, everything changes. While Del Rio was reportedly unhappy with his position in the company last time around, a return is never off the cards.

Patron is scheduled to headline the Impact Wrestling's Redemption event on April 22nd, challenging current champion Austin Aries.

Author's take

This one is interesting, mainly because Alberto Del Rio is a man whom controvery seems to shadow. With ex-fiancee Paige in the company, who is also facing a questionable future due to injury, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
