Is AJ Styles leaving WWE? Contract explored amid retirement match talks

AJ Styles has been a top-tier WWE since his return in 2016
AJ Styles has been a top-tier WWE Superstar since 2016.

AJ Styles is about to complete his seventh year in WWE. One of the workhorses of the promotion, the passion that he brings to the wrestling ring has been phenomenal (no pun intended). The veteran has given countless spectacles against the likes of John Cena, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley).

The WWE Universe wants to see the SmackDown star square off against more talent. Unfortunately, The Phenomenal One might be considering hanging his boots as he recently stated that he had an opponent in mind for his last match. Styles will turn 46 this June, and wrestlers usually retire around that age.

The thought of AJ Styles leaving WWE corresponds to the remaining years of his contract. According to reports, his contract extension will come to an end in 2024. Styles was believed to have signed a three-year deal in 2019 but reconsidered due to a lucrative offer from the company. Thus, the two-time world champion could renounce wrestling next year.

It was previously reported that AJ Styles' WWE contract included a few perks, and he deserved the $3 million per year deal.

"Those that confirmed the deal to us said that 'he deserved every penny,' and 'would easily make that back for the company.' We're also told that he has some additional bus travel accommodations paid for," stated the report.

AJ's retirement will be a huge blow to WWE. Fortunately, given the shape that he is in, he may renew his contract and push himself till he attains the age of 50. Edge (49) and Rey Mysterio (48) are still pouring their heart and soul into the ring.

What's next for AJ Styles in WWE?

For those unknown about the recent events, AJ Styles punched his ticket to the Night of Champions Premium Live Event with clinical performances against Rey Mysterio, Edge, and Bobby Lashley. He is one of the finalists of the World Heavyweight Championship alongside Seth Rollins.

The Phenomenal One will be in action on the upcoming blue brand show. He is speculated to have a long-term program with his new rival, Karrion Kross, who revealed a tarot card with Styles' picture on it last week. Grayson Waller could have unfinished business with the veteran as well.

AJ Styles was thought to be Roman Reigns' next opponent for the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, but the rumors were debunked. It remains to be seen if he ever crosses paths with The Tribal Chief or shifts to RAW after winning the World Heavyweight Championship.
