New WWE Intercontinental Championship unveiled on SmackDown

"Out with the old and in with the new!"

Tonight's episode of WWE SmackDown emanates from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois and is the go-home show for the blue-brand before Survivor Series. The show kicked things off with a triple threat match between Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, and Rhea Ripley which was won by Ripley.

After the match, WWE Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura and his mouthpiece Sami Zayn came down to the ring. Zayn was carrying a black bag that seemed to contain something. Much to everyone's surprise, Zayn took out a new Intercontinental Championship and gifted it to Nakamura.

The history of the Intercontinental Championship

The Intercontinental Championship is one of the most prestigious titles in WWE as has often been made clear by eight-time Intercontinental Champion, The Miz. WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson is regarded as the first-ever WWE Intercontinental Champion and he won the title on September 1, 1979.

After that a plethora of WWE Hall of Famers and legends such as The Ultimate Warrior, Shawn Michaels, and Mr. Perfect to name a few have gone on to hold the title. It can be said without a doubt that the Intercontinental Championship plays a huge role in elevating a WWE Superstar's career.

The last design of the Intercontinental Championship was introduced by former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes at WWE Hell in a Cell (2011) and now tonight on November 22, 2019, history has been made once again.
