CM Punk is one of WWE's top babyfaces today. The Second City Savior opened up about a childhood moment that left a negative impression.
Punk has been in the business for nearly two decades. Before that, he was a young wrestling fan who watched shows from the comfort of his home.
Speaking on the No Contest Wrestling Podcast, CM Punk opened up about a pivotal moment in his early days that left a bad taste in his mouth. He spoke about the main event of WrestleMania IX in 1993, where Yokozuna defeated Bret Hart for the WWE Championship.
He noted that he was left confused when Hulk Hogan returned after Yokozuna won the title. Mr. Fuji challenged Hulk Hogan to a match against Yokozuna, and Bret Hart convinced The Hulkster to accept the challenge.
"I remember being confused at WrestleMania 9 when Hogan just came out of nowhere [and defeated Yokozuna]. As a kid it didn’t feel good at all. I don’t know how smart or not smart I was at that point but I remember just watching it and being like ‘ugh, what?’"
The storyline did not make sense to a nine-year-old Punk, who could not understand why the babyface needed to stand tall at the end of a major event. He felt bad for Bret Hart, who was made to look weak throughout the segment.
"Knowing what I know now, just the finish of a WrestleMania with the heel up is just flat. There’s a time and a place [for the bad guy winning]. They made Bret look a little… yeah…," CM Punk said. (H/T ITR Wrestling)
CM Punk is doing a phenomenal job as a top babyface on WWE RAW. He could get into an important rivalry ahead of WrestleMania 41.
CM Punk stood tall at WWE Bad Blood
Being the babyface in WWE comes with a lot of responsibility. CM Punk has been seen as a massive babyface since his return to the company, and he cemented his position with an excellent rivalry against Drew McIntyre.
The two superstars competed in the third match of their rivalry inside Hell in a Cell at Bad Blood. Punk came out on top after the two WWE Superstars took each other to the edge and beat each other down in brutal fashion.
The Second City Saint will likely sit out for a few weeks before returning for another major rivalry. The company will look to push him into a feud with Seth Rollins sooner rather than later.
