Drew McIntyre and CM Punk joined Seth Rollins in the opening segment of WWE RAW this week. A WWE legend believes the company played it safe during the segment, and The Scottish Warrior did the right thing during his promo.
Drew McIntyre will face CM Punk in a grudge match at the upcoming SummerSlam: Cleveland PLE. What makes matters more interesting is Seth Rollins’ addition as the Special Guest Referee for the contest.
WWE legend Tommy Dreamer broke down Monday night’s segment involving the three top stars. He noted that the company played it safe to ensure no punches were thrown during the segment during the Busted Open After Dark podcast.
"A lot of the main players [in the opening segment] ... the go-home show, I was talking earlier before, it's either being [like] you're gonna play safe because you don't want to risk injury or giving too much before the go-home show because we have a massive pay-per-view coming up, stadium full of people. Or are you gonna push the envelope? I think some people put the pedal to the metal, and other people kinda played it a little bit safe," said the veteran star.
Dreamer added that Rollins’ inclusion in the rivalry adds a new dimension to the match. He enjoyed seeing Drew McIntyre explain why he wanted to beat CM Punk badly.
"I really do feel that it [Rollins as referee] adds intrigue for this match because you know someone's gone piss each other off," explained Dreamer. "Another great tidbit that Drew McIntyre added — and I loved it — he said he is going to be paid a lot of money to kick CM Punk's a** because it's at a stadium show." [H/T Wrestling Inc.]
The Visionary will likely take sides during the contest and could play a vital role in its conclusion.
WWE has worked hard on the storyline between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk
WWE works for months to build certain rivalries before taking them to their boiling point. However, the rivalry between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk took some unfortunate turns, especially due to Punk's injury at the 2024 Royal Rumble.
The Best in the World tore his right triceps, and McIntyre took full credit for it. It has helped the two men stay in each other’s business, and Punk has cost Drew the World Heavyweight Championship and several other matches.
WWE fans will love to see what these two men do to each other at SummerSlam. Seth Rollins will have to do his best to ensure that the match reaches a logical conclusion and that the rivalry between Punk and McIntyre continues.
