The 6 shortest Intercontinental Title reigns in history

The Intercontinental Championship has been in existence since 1979 and in the near forty years since it has featured some very long title reigns such as The Honky Tonk Man's record 454 days as Champion.

However, there have been several reigns that have been considerably shorter. This countdown looks at the six shortest in WWE history.

=3 Zack Ryder (1 day)

Zack Ryder shockingly won the Intercontinental Championship at Wrestlemania 32, in 2016, at least four years after he had last been a relevant part of WWE programming.

Those fans optimistic that Ryder's win would see a renewed push for "The Long Island Iced Z" were soon disappointed. 24 hours later in fact, when new Champion, Ryder was dethroned by perennial Intercontinental Champion The Miz on Raw.

Ryder immediately disappeared from television again and has been nowhere close to a Championship ever since.

=3 Edge (1 day)

Edge wins his first Intercontinental Championship at a house show in Toronto

In the summer of 1999, WWE tried to push Edge as a singles performer once again, as they had the previous summer.

This time Edge won gold. Edge defeated Jeff Jarrett at a non-televised house show in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on July 24, 1999, to win his first Intercontinental Championship.

Edge defended the title the next night at the Fully Loaded pay per view wherein he dropped the belt back to Jarrett.

His singles push wouldn't last much longer as he was once again teamed with Christian in his next pay per view appearance at Summerslam.

It was a pairing that lasted another two years and saw the tandem win 7 Tag Team Championships before Edge embarked on another rather more successful singles run, following the team's break up.

=3 The Miz (1 day x2)

The Miz has reigned as Intercontinental Champion eight times in total. However, two of those reigns lasted just one day.

The first of which was on the Wrestlemania 29 pre-show when he defeated Wade Barrett to lift the strap then lost it back to him on the next episode of Raw.

Miz experienced the igniomony once more in 2014, when he beat Dolph Ziggler at Night of Champions but then lost a re-match to Ziggler the next night on Raw.

The Miz will surely remember his other six IC reigns much more fondly.

#2 Chris Jericho (1 hour)

On the October 27, 2003 episode of Raw, Chris Jericho defeated Intercontinental Champion, Rob Van Dam to win his sixth IC title.

However, RVD enacted his re-match clause that same night and beat Jericho to win back the title.

Jericho's reign had not even lasted one full episode of Raw. Certainly, it was not the most memorable of his record nine IC reigns.

#1 Dean Douglas (15 minutes)

Poor Dean Douglas. The former Shane Douglas, ECW World Champion and super-star worker had joined the WWF in summer 1995 and had been saddled with a ludicrous college Dean gimmick.

This did nothing to capitalise on Douglas's immense talents. Despite this setback, Douglas managed to work his way up to Intercontinental Championship contender-ship.

When Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels was assaulted in real life by a group of inebriated marines, he was unable to wrestle on the October 1995 card, In Your House 4.

Michaels reluctantly vacated the title, making Douglas the new Champion.

Forced to defend the title immediately, Douglas then lost to Razor Ramon. His reign lasted barely 15 minutes. A record unlikely to be broken any time soon, Douglas is likely to remain as the ignominious answer to the trivia question of who had the shortest IC reign in history.
