4 Worst WWE Money in The Bank winners

Enter c

Money in The Bank is a concept invented by the G.O.A.T., Chris Jericho. It is a very interesting concept where the winner can cash-in the contract whenever he wants – as long as you have a referee. Since 2005, we have had 19 Money in The Bank winners – sometimes two of them in one year.

However, winning the contract doesn’t guarantee a great title run or even a successful cash-in. Sometimes, WWE get cold feet for a certain superstar and makes him screw up the cash-in. Or, in case of Mr Kennedy, pass the briefcase to someone else to prevent an injury from hampering the storyline.

Various WWE Superstars have failed to use the Money in The Bank briefcase as a catapult to the main roster. Names like Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger come to mind upon mentioning the failures. These superstars either messed up their cash-in or never got the expected reaction on being champion.

Today, we look at the worst Money in The Bank winners and their subsequent cash-ins.

#4 Alberto Del Rio

<p>

In 2011, Alberto Del Rio received the pushed of his life when he won the biggest Royal Rumble (till 2018) and faced Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 27. Despite losing the match, he still didn’t lose his push and went on to win that year’s Raw Money in The Bank. One of the reasons his win fell flat was due to its underwhelming nature.

At that time, it was difficult to invest in the guy due to his boring gimmick. What soured his cash-in was the fact that he ruined one of the most intriguing storylines of the decade. After the main event of SummerSlam i.e. John Cena vs CM Punk, he cashed in on the winner CM Punk. Not that any cash-in could have ruined that, but a superstar like Alberto Del Rio could never have induced a significant reaction.

After a forgetful title run, John Cena won the championship from Alberto Del Rio at Night of Champions. He regained it at Hell in a Cell and then finally dropped the belt to CM Punk at Survivor Series. He never really recovered from the god-awful title reign and then gradually reversing his push.

#3 Baron Corbin

Everything about Baron Corbin’s push was head-scratching. Not only did he won a Money in The Bank in which Nakamura, AJ Styles, Sami Zayn and Dolph Ziggler were participating but alsio failed to cash it in. Like with Del Rio, this is a guy who was exceedingly tough to get behind due to his lack of charisma and forgettable gimmick. When he cashed in on then-WWE Champion Jinder Mahal, John Cena interfered in the match which cost him the championship.

It was perhaps for the best, as we already had a terrible champion in Jinder Mahal and undoubtedly Cobin's bland character could result in another terrible champion. Although rumours accused him to have lost the contract due to backstage politics.

To add salt to the burn, his feud with John Cena was quickly wrapped up with Cena burying him at a Summerslam opener. Thus, a year’s Money in The Bank and a potential heated rivalry was flushed down the drain.

#2 John Cena

John Cena’s Money in the Bank victory and subsequent cash-in was questionable, to say the least. Money in The Bank is usually used as a concept to push potential headliners currently stuck in the mid-card to the top. Or sometimes to push a guy who has been out of the title picture for far too long. Neither of that was the case for Cena.

This was back when Cena was in his prime and was getting title shots every other month. Furthermore, WWE refused to capitalize on the opportunity to make the guy turn heel and made him ‘declare’ his cash-in weeks before the said cash-in. When he finally cashed-in at Raw 1000, Big Show interfered in the match, then The Rock interfered and CM Punk turned heel.

Throughout the 'cash-in', the Money in The Bank contract was at no time the core focus of the match. It just felt like another shot to make 'Super' Cena champion once again. All-in-all, 2012’s Money in The Bank was wasted.

#1 Jack Swagger

After a botched win at WrestleMania 26 where he couldn’t even retrieve the briefcase, Jack Swagger was given a push, much to the dismay of fans who didn’t even like the guy. He was obviously raw and was not quite ready to be the face of SmackDown.

Tie it in with the fact that other guys like Christian, Drew McIntyre and Evan Bourne were in the match, he was almost destined to fail. When he won the championship after pinning Chris Jericho, his push suddenly vanished.

Throughout his abysmal title run, Swagger had a pitiful 5-12 match record. Even a lack of a great booking can be salvaged if the wrestler is skilled on the microphone. Sadly, Swagger was petrified to talk in front of the crowd and delivered cringe-worthy promos. After just two pay-per-view defences, he lost the title to Rey Mysterio, thus being one of the worst Money in The Bank winners till date.

After the sad title run, Swagger fell down the card and never climbed up the ranks again. Before long, he asked for his release from the WWE thus ending his tenure at the company.
