John Cena has been on fire since he turned heel and captured his 17th world championship, beating Cody Rhodes earlier this year at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. The Last Real Champion will be in action in a few hours in a tag team bout against Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso alongside his tag partner, Logan Paul.
SummerSlam 2025, one of the company's 'Big Four' events, is just over a month away, emanating from the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This year’s Biggest Party of the Summer is going to be a first of its kind as it will be the first-ever two-night SummerSlam, making it a WrestleMania-level event.
John Cena is bound to compete in a major match; his rematch against Cody Rhodes is an odds-on favorite. In a shocking turn of events, Triple H could return to an on-screen role after a long absence and might turn heel, capitalizing on the recent heat he has been getting and aligning himself with Cena, resurrecting the iconic 'Authority' faction.
Fans will likely be expecting The Rock to return to WWE at the PLE, especially after not showing up at WrestleMania. However, due to his acting commitments, he may not be able to appear at SummerSlam. This would be the one major reason behind Triple H turning heel and bringing back The Authority, with John Cena as its new face. Such a major twist would definitely compensate for the absence of The Rock from another major WWE PLE.
Moreover, The Game has a bitter history with Rhodes, as The American Nightmare took some shots at Triple H during his AEW stint and even smashed his signature throne during an entrance. As a result, confronting Rhodes for his actions before returning to WWE would make for compelling long-term storytelling.
The proposed angle above is speculative, and nothing has been confirmed.
Reports on John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes 2 in WWE
While speaking on the latest edition of WrestleVotes Q&A on Sportskeeda WrestleBinge, WrestleVotes said that John Cena and Cody Rhodes could lock horns in a singles rematch at Night of Champions or SummerSlam 2025.
"I'm willing to bet that match happens. Don't know when. The Saudi show is at the end of June, I guess they could do it there, I'd hate it, I think a lot of people would hate it, but that's a possibility. And then there's SummerSlam. That match could be on top Saturday night, Sunday night, no problem. So, we'll see." [From 31:57 onwards]
It will be interesting to see how the Cena-Rhodes saga unfolds in the coming months.
