What's the story?

The WWE Universe was witness to what can only be called a bizarre segment on Raw tonight, as none other than the 48-year-old veteran Goldust came out to confront John Cena, while the latter was considering his WrestleMania prospects.

In case you didn’t know…

Goldust aka Dustin Runnels, son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, is a veteran in the pro wrestling business, having made his debut way back in 1988. He debuted his bizarre, sexually-ambiguous gimmick of Goldust back in 1995. He later left for WCW during '99-'01 before returning to the erstwhile WWF in 2001.

The heart of the matter

John Cena made a surprise appearance on Raw and started talking about his current prospects for WrestleMania, vowing to break Ric Flair's record and become a 17-time World Champion at WWE Fastlane. He went on to add that AJ Styles could even use his rematch clause to make the Championship match a triple threat bout between himself, Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura.

Before he could continue, the 'Shattered Dreams' theme hit and out came Goldust. The 'bizarre one' started talking about how even he had a dream, that of 'soaking in the spotlight at WrestleMania' and sharing the screen with someone like John Cena.

Finally, Goldust assured the 'leader of Cenation' that he was about to 'shatter' his dreams, before hitting Cena with a cheap shot.

Cena and Goldust then faced off in a singles contest, for the first time ever. The bout ended with Cena hitting the AA to pick up the win.

What's next?

The 16-time World Champion is set to face off against 5 other competitors in a six-pack challenge for the WWE Championship at the SmackDown Live exclusive PPV Fastlane, which is set to take place on March 11 in the Nationwide Arena in Colombus, Ohio.

However, if the rumour mill is to be believed, John Cena is set to have a program with The Undertaker at WrestleMania, and his match at Fastlane is just a distraction.

Author's take

The segment between John Cena and Goldust was a bizarre one to say the least, but to be honest Goldust's dream to share the spotlight at WrestleMania is not too off.

A World Title run is too far a shot, but he surely deserves one last run with the Intercontinental Title at least, before hanging up his boots.
