What’s the story?

In an interview with Boston Wrestling Sports, John Cena Sr. opined that Matt Hardy’s ‘Woken’ gimmick wouldn’t work in the WWE.

Additionally, Cena Sr. also revealed why the idea of booking ‘Woken’ Matt Hardy in a feud with Bray Wyatt is a bad idea, in addition to adding which Superstar he’d like to see emerge victorious in the ongoing feud.

In case you didn’t know…

Matt Hardy, his wife Reby, father-in-law Senor Benjamin, son Maxel and brother Jeff Hardy popularized the ‘Broken’ gimmick in Impact Wrestling back in 2016.

The gimmick received a highly positive response from fans and experts alike. However, the Hardys parted ways with the promotion in early-2017, and were embroiled in legal dispute over the ownership rights of the gimmick with Impact Wrestling parent company Anthem ever since.

The heart of the matter

Regardless, with the legal issues seemingly sorted, and Jeff Hardy out with an injury, Matt has commenced the portrayal of his aforementioned gimmick in the WWE, albeit as ‘Woken’ Matt Hardy.

John Cena Sr. asserted that given the highly-publicized legal dispute with Impact Wrestling and how long fans have had to wait for the return of the Broken gimmick, he gives it about 30-45 days before ‘Woken’ Matt Hardy runs its course in WWE. He stated—

“The gimmick--here's the thing, everybody wanted more frosting on the cake. Finally, Vince (McMahon), WWE, the writers go 'Okay, we're gonna give you more frosting on the cake,' and what's the first thing that happens when you first bite the cake? 'Too (much) sweetness, too much frosting on the cake. I don't like it!' And that's exactly what's gonna to happen.”

Furthermore, Cena Sr. continued that if it were in his capacity to pick either Matt or Bray Wyatt to go over, he’d choose Wyatt to win and go over. Cena Sr. reiterated that the entire feud isn’t fair on Wyatt.

What’s next?

‘Woken’ Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt presently perform on the WWE’s RAW brand, and are expected to continue their feud in the days to come.

Author’s take

It’d be safe to say that most fans would disagree with John Cena Sr. here, in the sense that ‘Woken’ Matt Hardy is pretty over with the fans right now.

The revival of the Broken gimmick in the WWE has been a success thus far, and is likely to reach a crescendo as and when the WWE Universe nears the Royal Rumble. Do you agree with Cena Sr.’s thoughts? Sound off in the comments!
