WWE RAW: 5 Reasons why Brock Lesnar brutalized Rey Mysterio & his son Dominick

What a great start to WWE RAW this segment was
What a great start to WWE RAW this segment was

We all knew that the season premiere of RAW was going to be explosive. I mean you had a new theme song, a new commentary team, a new vibe and most importantly, pyro.

Rey Mysterio kicked things off as only he can, and the audience was all geared up for a match between him and the Universal Champion, Seth Rollins. But then, to the surprise of everyone in the arena, Brock Lesnar's music would hit and he would step in to earmark a new season of RAW.

But Rey Mysterio's son Dominick who was at ringside, would not be spared as The Beast Incarnate would destroy him as well. What could have been Vince McMahon and Paul Heyman's motivation in booking a show of this nature?

I will attempt to answer this question across the following points, in this very article.

#5 To introduce Dominick to the world in a very big way

Rey Mysterio has been doing what he's been doing for years and years now, and I think that it's safe to say that he's closer to the end of his career than the start of it. While he can still go at the highest level, Dominick, his teenage son is probably waiting in the wings to take his father's place in the ring. But how does Dominick make an impact in a roster that's already filled to the brim with talent?

The easiest way to do this is to share screen space with Brock Lesnar. There's nobody in the world of combat sports who's as big a star as Lesnar is, and one can argue that this was the best kind of debut that Dominick could have actually asked for. To move from the backstage area to an actual physical segment is a big deal!

#4 To build to a Mysterio vs. Lesnar match somewhere down the line

The first feud ever was probably the one between David and Goliath. And the reason it's discussed with so much enthusiasm to this day is that it's always great to see an underdog performer up against an insurmountable obstacle. And it must also be said that Brock Lesnar loves working with men who are smaller than him.

If you remember the match against Daniel Bryan, it was one of the better matches that he's had. The same can be said about his matches against AJ Styles and Finn Balor. Of course, everyone recalls his clash against CM Punk with much adoration and admiration as well. There is a lot of equity if WWE books a clash between Rey Mysterio and Brock Lesnar somewhere down the line.

Do you think Mysterio could defeat Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania to potentially become the WWE Champion?

#3 To save Mysterio vs. Rollins for an even bigger stage

I know that a lot of you were excited to see Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio on the Season Premiere of RAW. But the fact of the matter is that this is a match that could have potentially main-evented a pay-per-view event and as special as this episode of RAW was, it was still not a pay-per-view.

So maybe WWE wants to save this special match for a bigger stage somewhere down the line. I mean stories about Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio did big numbers for Sportskeeda through the week, and I'm guessing WWE noticed how much the main event was trending, which is why they saved it for sometime later.

Maybe Seth Rollins will be a heel by the time this match happens. I mean Rey Mysterio could be a heel too, but it's much more unlikely in his case.

Could we see this match at a stage like WrestleMania?

#2 To start a new storyline with Brock Lesnar

Well, we saw Paul Heyman try and explain Brock Lesnar's attack on Rey Mysterio and Dominick at the tail end of the show, where he name-dropped Vince McMahon. I wonder if this means we'll go into a whole Heyman vs. McMahon feud for the top spot in RAW. I also wonder if this means that Vince McMahon will take action against Brock Lesnar.

This could also potentially lead to an angle where Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar split up. I mean it's pretty obvious that the two men will be on different brands, in the days that follow. I think that it is quite possible, that Heyman may not have time to work SmackDown duties with his responsibilities on RAW.

One thing that we know for sure is that something big is brewing. I am sure that whatever the ongoing storyline is, it's a big deal!

#1 To build to a Cain Velasquez vs. Lesnar match?

We've seen many men and women from the world of MMA step into the wrestling ring and dominate it with their incredible crossover skills. From Ken Shamrock to Ronda Rousey to Shayna Baszler to Matt Riddle, each has had a certain degree of success.

Cain Velasquez seems to be the latest to join this coveted pack, and it has been reported by wrestling guru Dave Meltzer that a showdown between Lesnar and Velasquez may be imminent. Shout out to my colleague Daniel Wood who alerted me to this possibility and Lennard Surrao for the write-up that has been linked at the top.

Now, Velasquez has been wrestling in a mask outside the WWE, and I'm guessing that he will bring the same look to WWE too. When he does, he can take on Brock Lesnar, this time in a WWE ring, not an octagon, to avenge the attack on Mysterio.

Did Paul Heyman also allude to Velasquez during his promo when he said 'Mixed Martial Arts?'
