WWE: Resurrection of Goldust

Rhodes brothers

Goldust with his brother Cody Rhodes

In professional wrestling, with time, the young guns get a chance to prove themselves. It is difficult for a veteran to get better with time, as not only do they have to adapt to the changing scenario in the industry, but the focus shifts from the aging talents to their younger peers. Professional wrestling is all about transition, as the baton is passed from the older performers to the younger ones.

In WWE, it only gets harder, as there is a lot of competition among the talents to grab the brass ring. You have the likes of Ziggler and Wade Barrett, who in spite of possessing some of the greatest talent can’t make it “big”. Considering the amount of hard work and dedication these guys put in every single day, it is hard to imagine an old timer coming back and grabbing the spotlight, putting on good to great matches every single week.

In today’s world of WWE, you have the likes of Daniel Bryan and CM Punk, who steal the show every single week. You also have the Seth Rollins’ and Dean Ambroses, who have the ability to outperform everyone. But there is one guy who, in spite of being one of the older talents in the locker room, has been able to hang around with the younger stallions. If you were a betting man, you’d say that he even outperformed most of them since his return. When Goldust came back to face Randy Orton about a month ago on RAW, no one would have expected him to be as good as he was. Goldust put on the match of the night with Orton, and although everyone heaped praises on him, they thought it was a fluke. And like any good performer, he proved them wrong.

Goldust has been involved in several matches in the past month, and almost all of them were the “Match of the Night” candidates on those episodes. What more? He outperformed all the other participants, and has proven himself all over again. This is a man who was in the WWE even before the Attitude Era started, survived through the most famous period in professional wrestling and has somehow managed to reinvent himself when the WWE gave him a call. Goldust has not only been one of the most versatile performers in the business, but also one of the most charismatic individuals. If anything, his work inside the squared circle has immensely improved, and since his return, he has been one of the best performers on the card.

WWE has realized this, and has taken a smart decision to put the WWE Tag Team titles on Goldust and his brother, Cody Rhodes. Both the brothers have been top notch, and have managed to raise quite a few eyebrows with their work ethic. Although Cody was always seen as someone who was outstanding in the ring, his brother has somehow managed to elevate Cody’s presence, which he was direly in need of. With Cody and Goldust being the current tag team champions, they have also brought some much needed credibility to the division, which otherwise only had The Shield and a couple of other decent tag teams. This storyline opens a lot of doors going forward, and has generated a lot of interest among the WWE Universe.

There is also a possibility of Goldust turning on Cody Rhodes, thus leading to their match at next year’s edition of WrestleMania. Goldust has been rooting for a match against his brother for a couple of years now, but the WWE had turned a blind eye to his pleas. Like any good soldier, Goldust was patient, and when he was offered a chance, he grabbed it with both hands and has been making the most of it. It is also fair to say that Goldust has been the performer in the WWE, although Daniel Bryan might get the benefit for his tremendous work in the past year. The only difference is, no one expected Goldust to be so good, while Daniel Bryan is the best technical wrestler in the world at the moment.

The story of Goldust isn’t your normal, everyday story of a professional wrestler. Like wine, Goldust has gotten better with age. As someone who was only seen as a comedy act till his last run, Goldust has finally broken those shackles, and is one of the best workers in the WWE today. The resurrection of Goldust has been a fascinating one, and the WWE Universe and professional wrestling fans will be hoping for this to continue, as it will only lead to better matches in the future.
