Seth Rollins must divorce The Authority to further his legacy

All good things must come to an end. In this case, in the matter of Seth Rollins and his relationship with The Authority, all things that have slowly fizzled like the air being let out of a balloon, must end immediately.

I get the feeling the Night of Champions match between Rollins, the current WWE World Champion, and Sting will result in a sudden departure from the current program, with a script written where Stephanie McMahon will hand Rollins his walking papers and the disbanding of the heel faction.

Maybe, finally, wrestling fans will see a new direction for Rollins, who is still an untapped gem who could be the biggest thing to come around WWE’s circus since CM Punk’s 435-day reign as company champion.

There is a lot to like about Rollins and his potential as the top heel for years to come, but a connection to both Triple H and Stephanie is bad news for the former Shield member if he is going to spread his wings and fly.

Monday’s RAW program proved beyond a shadow of a doubt two things: Rollins plays the role of narcissist as well as any wrestler we have seen in a while, and McMahon hit the nail on the head when she said he was not as polished as her husband at this point in his career.

Those are fighting words in professional wrestling, sure enough to see a war of words and a potential in-ring match at a pay-per-view near you. A match between the “Cerebral Assassin” and the ”Architect” is worthy of a WrestleMania match, but the build, seven months in the making, may be too long for any wrestling fan to care what happens to either wrestler when the time comes.

A TLC pay-per-view main event is more likely – with a stipulation or two of some sort added for good measure. I love a great idea when it comes together on the page. It reads like victory.

If you are not a fan of Rollins and his new-age style of heel character, then you haven’t understood the genesis of the program in the first place. The need for Triple H to groom someone in his own mold, only to turn his back on them in the end. In this instance, Rollins is one part Triple H, the other part McMahon in his “retreat is best for business” approach. And his work lately has been some of the best in the ring we have seen in years.

He is a cruiserweight dream, mixing his mat skills with an aerial assault that has me thinking CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit rolled into one. Yes, he can be that good. But for now, the impending divorce is the storyline, not the man behind the move away from being under lock and key. It’s happened before in other story lines.

The ousting of Ole Anderson from The Horsemen. Farooq leaving the Nation of Domination. Michael Hayes leaving the Freebirds. They all have had significance in wrestling lore. In order for Rollins to realize his full potential and for WWE to be able to use him in other storylines, possibly a face turn at some point, the confrontation must happen.

The fact McMahon is the one who is doing the bidding for the Authority will lead to Triple H’s defense of his wife. That means a match in the near future.

And a divorce that isn’t just needed, it’s long overdue – just like this storyline.
