WWE SmackDown: 5 Reasons why The New Day became the new Tag Team Champions

The New Day picked up a win against The Revival
The New Day picked up a win against The Revival

Following a terrible opening promo from Baron Corbin in which he imitated a dog to slight Roman Reigns, fans geared up for what was always going to be a massive clash. The New Day and The Revival locked up for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.

After what was a pretty entertaining match, the world gasped as something shocking happened. The New Day would defeat The Revival to become the SmackDown Tag Team Champions.

And yet, one must ask if this was a surprising decision or if indeed it makes all the sense in the world to put the titles around the ever swiveling New Day hips. In this article, I shall delve upon why Vince McMahon may have chosen to make The New Day the brand new Tag Team Champions.

I invite you guys to leave a comment in the section below.

#5 To make the Survivor Series match more exciting

The Revival are perhaps the best tag team of our generation bringing back old-school tricks to a modern sports entertainment audience. Unfortunately, at no point in history, has good work been a measuring stick for just how over you are with the fans. The Road Warriors were never The Young Bucks, but they are probably the most 'over' tag team in history.

So for Survivor Series to have any real star power, The Revival had to be replaced by The New Day when the three tag team units clash. The Undisputed ERA are certainly the best act in NXT, The Viking Raiders have taken RAW by storm and SmackDown needed someone in the same ballpark. They have achieved this with The New Day, and how!

Thankfully, The New Day are fantastic in the ring too. Is it any wonder they were made the brand new SmackDown Tag Champions?

#4 To get New Day into the record books

With this win, The New Day has become Tag Team Champions (RAW and SmackDown) for the seventh time. They are in elite company right now and can potentially break the records set by The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz.

But one thing that one needs to remember is that The New Day is just at the beginning of their careers. Maybe they break Ric Flair's record in due time and become 16-time Tag Team Champions. The little jibe that was directed at Charlotte Flair may have been indicative of WWE's plans for The New Day.

These two men are already the longest reigning Champions in WWE history, pretty much proving just how much Vince McMahon believes in the trio. In a lot of ways, this was also a great tribute to Xavier Woods who the match was dedicated to, who will be out of action for a while.

#3 For the news to get out so that people tune in

This week's episode of SmackDown happened in Manchester and I'm sure anyone who's on a certain number of pro wrestling groups saw the spoiler when they logged in tonight. Because of the time difference, shows in the United Kingdom are taped, and WWE allows for the news to leak so that more people tune in.

When there's a certain amount of hype around the episode, a lot more people tune in. I mean when the whole Saudi Arabia travel incident happened, a lot more people tuned in to see what the company would do with all of their top stars missing.

So with the news of the NXT invasion and the tag team title change making its way to websites like ours, fans may have been compelled to watch the show. Or they may not have, based on whether or not they were intrigued enough with the spoilers.

But this was definitely one of the 'reasons'.

#2 To right the wrong in Kofi Kingston's case

Brock Lesnar had a short-lived stint on SmackDown before he moved to RAW to feud with Mysterio. While he was on the Blue Brand, he defeated Kofi Kingston in a matter of mere seconds. Kofi Kingston is someone who made history by winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania this year, defeating Daniel Bryan.

And following that, he defeated challenger after challenger until he faced off against Brock Lesnar in a match that was panned by fans. The WWE Universe was distraught at how little Kofi Kingston's reign meant for it to end in the manner that it did. And for the very same reason, WWE may be rewarding Kofi Kingston with a consolation prize.

In no way, does a SmackDown Tag Team Championship measure with respect to a WWE Championship. But then again, I suppose something is better than nothing at all.

#1 Highly reliable performers with guaranteed high merchandise sales

In a lot of ways, The New Day could be dubbed as the Roman Reigns of the SmackDown tag team division. They can always be relied on to have great matches and their merchandise sales are always through the roof as well.

As talented as The Revival are, they aren't quite the mainstream sensation that The New Day is. Because of all the dancing and the humor that is associated with their act, The New Day transcends a hardcore WWE fanbase and also draws in casuals.

And so, when Vince McMahon needs to go back to the well and make the tag team picture exciting again, he can call upon The New Day to elevate the division. I am assuming that Bruce Prichard feels the very same way too.

The power of positivity cannot be understated at all.
