Kofi Kingston has been a part of the company for over a decade, but he never got the push to the top. However, due to an injury to Mustafa Ali, the veteran was given a chance. The gauntlet match on SmackDown saw the WWE Universe immediately get behind Kingston, who had been so close to the top of the mountian on only a few occassions. The Elimination Chamber match that Sunday involved Daniel Bryan, AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy, Kofi Kingston, Randy Orton, and Samoa Joe, where the Planet's Champion was able to retain against his opponents.

While Kofi Kingston didn't win the match, he did win the respect of the WWE Universe and Superstars who were behind the him and wanted him to go for the championship. Vince McMahon decided to place hurdles in the path of one half of the current SmackDown Tag Team Champion by replacing him with Kevin Owens at Fastlane. The New Day members didn't find this worthwhile and questioned Mr. McMahon, who agreed to grant a title match to Kofi if he won the gauntlet match on SmackDown.

The former United States Champion defeated everyone, but the Chairman of the Board added another opponent to this mix, Daniel Bryan. The WWE Champion pinned Kingston, seemingly putting an end to his hopes of a title bout at Mania. The New Day members didn't appreciate this and threatened to leave the company, which led to Mr. McMahon agree on the fact that if The New Day members win a gauntlet match, then Kofi will get a title match at WrestleMania.

The New Day defeated the challengers, and Kofi Kingston ultimately knocked off the Planet's Champion to win the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35. The WWE Universe appreciated and was in tears at this result.
