GTA Vice City Stories might have failed to reach as wide an audience as the OG Vice City, but it still impressed the Grand Theft Auto community. The improvement in features and gameplay mechanics are just some of the reasons for that. While Tommy might be a more memorable protagonist for most players, Victor Vance has his own charm.

While the OG Vice City was quite fun with its interesting missions and hilarious characters, it was lacking in many ways. Rockstar Games worked on these shortcomings and fixed most of them in GTA Vice City Stories.

This article will shed light on five things Vice City Stories did better, which allowed it to flourish compared to the OG GTA Vice City.

5 things that set GTA Vice City Stories apart from the OG Vice City

1) More intricate missions

While Vice City was a big jump from GTA 3 for the players as well as Rockstar Games, the game was far behind in mission structures. However, the studio worked on that front, making the tasks and missions in GTA Vice City Stories much better than its predecessors.

The overall length of the missions was also longer and played a big part in keeping everyone interested. There was enough action from Victor Vance which sometimes was missing from the OG Vice City. Being the way GTA games are, action and violence always take priority, thereby setting Vice City stories apart.

2) A variety of vehicles

While OG Vice City featured many vehicles, ranging from motorcycles to cars, it felt short compared to other titles like GTA Vice City Stories, which had numerous new vehicles including bicycles and ATVs.

These made the exploration aspect more fun by giving a variety of options for transport. Since GTA Vice City Stories added unconventional vehicles like ATVs, players could do many things that were impossible in the OG title.

3) Giving a more relatable protagonist

Tommy Vercetti is a beloved GTA protagonist thanks to his hilarious dialogs and daring acts. However, at the end of the day, players couldn't relate to this drug-fuelled action hero as he went about his day slaying opponents and taking over businesses.

On the other hand, Victor Vance proved to be much more relatable with his daily struggles and a sad backstory. Being dishonorably discharged from the military after getting strung into a conspiracy and then ending up going against your senior in the underworld business does a number on anybody. Even then, Victor retained some of his humanity, making him much more likable.

4) Refined controls and features

The 3-D era GTA games suffered from wonky controls that sometimes made the gameplay less enjoyable. This major issue was resolved to an extent in GTA Vice City Stories. Rockstar Games did a great job refining the controls for both keyboard and mouse as well as for controllers.

This means controlling RC vehicles is much easier and one can successfully complete the required tasks instead of crashing into random objects every couple of minutes. The developer worked on smoothing out the features, which eventually made GTA Vice City Stories differ from the OG Vice City.

5) A believable plot

Rockstar Games follows a staple formula of dropping players into a criminal's life and making them go back and forth between missions as the story slowly unfolds. This was also the case with Vice City, where one was suddenly playing as Tommy Vercetti working for the mafia without knowing anything about his past.

Rockstar Games handled this in a much better way with GTA Vice City Stories and slowly led players into the life of Victory Vance. The plot progressed from him serving in the military to slowly becoming a hardcore criminal for the sake of saving his loved ones. This is much better storytelling that immerses players into the plot and the characters better.
