WWE Battleground 2014: Superstar Ratings

WWEs latest pay-per-view venture, Battleground didnt turn out as the WWE planned it to be. A string of bad booking decisions and matches not reaching expectations were the story of the night in which the WWE Universe had all the right to ask for a refund. The best match of the night had to be the tag team bout between Usos and Wyatt Family but was haunted by a botched ending. The Fatal four way match also looked solid but for a match that had four main event names, it also failed to reach the expectation levels. All the other matches were forgettable to say the least and rounded off the poor buildup that WWE gave for SummerSlam. With all said, here is a look at the Superstar ratings for the show.

#15 Paige 5

For the past three months, Paige has been holding the divas division together with whoever she was put up against. The hopes were high for her clash with AJ Lee but it fell flat once the bell rang as both divas weren’t showing a portion of their talent. The loss affects Paige badly and she has to recover fast.

#14 Kofi Kingston 6

It was easy to pick any other name from the battle royal at the pay-per-view, but Kofi is someone who deserves a place in the ratings more because of his consistent show in these type of matches. He could well be the best battle royal wrestler WWE has ever seen and Sunday was another showcase of his talent under such circumstances.

#13 AJ Lee 6

AJ Lee was out to defend her title against Paige in a match that had big explosives waiting to erupt. WWE however didn’t go to that extent and decided to let the two divas deliver a boring match. The future of the feud is still up in the air, but if it’s going to be stretched like this WWE should find another opponent for AJ soon.

#12 Chris Jericho 6.5

Jericho is someone who is known for delivering some great matches with any opponent that he gets. Same was expected from him at Battleground but it turned out to be a slow misfired match that did no good for anyone. The win does nothing for Jericho’s momentum as he would’ve rather sang a song for Fozzy than fighting Bray on Sunday.

#11 Seth Rollins 6.5

Though Rollins didn’t wrestle, he was there to pull off an angle that received mixed reactions from the WWE Universe. Winning the match by forfeit has earned more heat for the Money in the bank holder and the fans would love to see him get hurt soon for everything he has done so far.

#10 Rusev 7

The Bulgarian brute seems to be breaking out of the monster gimmick as each pay-per-view passes and this might work in favor of him for the long run. He remains unbeaten even though it was in a twisted way and kept his run going with the post-match dominance of Swagger.

#9 The Miz 7

After a long break from being relevant, the awesome one was back in the mix at Battleground as he won the Intercontinental championship. The title is sure to make Miz a main stay for SummerSlam and also opens up the possibility of WWE having a unification match in the future.

#8 Jack Swagger 7

A few years back Swagger used to be in the main event scene and it was on Sunday that he proved to the world that he had the caliber to be there. He had a solid match against Rusev and also earned the tag of pushing the Bulgarian brute to his limit. Swagger can only travel up from this point as he enjoys a lot of momentum.

#7 Dean Ambrose 7

The emotions in Ambrose were running wild when he came to know that he was forced to sit out of the pay-per-view. His hate for the Authority and Rollins only grew with the incident and the fans have found another reason to back this maniac, who wants to tear the system apart.

#6 Wyatt Family 7.5

A big reason why the Wyatt family got this rating is Erick Rowan and Luke Harper. Those two gave yet another solid match with the Usos while Bray Wyatt was seen in an awkward situation with Jericho in a match that had no moment to cherish. Bray failed to live up to the expectation like most of the superstars and this has cost them the chance to climb higher in the ratings.

#5 Kane 7.5

The big red monster made a bigger impact in the fatal four way match than expected when he turned on Randy Orton and stopped the viper from winning the match. This might be the first step towards another face run for Kane which will be fueled with the heat that Authority has now.

#4 The Usos 7.5

Though the Usos retaining the tag titles was a bad for business move, it was the best way in which WWE could’ve started off the night. An extraordinary match was delivered by the two teams and Usos triumphing in the end has left them at the top of the division with no team near to steal their throne.

#3 Randy Orton 7.5

Orton showed once again that he deserves to be in the main event when he strived under the pressure. His friction with Kane would be a plot worth following to SummerSlam as it might end up in a face turn for Orton if Kane turns out to be working for the Authority.

#2 John Cena 8

It’s in situations like these that the WWE show that Cena is still the face of the company. Heading into a crucial part of the year and big pay-per-view, WWE chose Cena to be the torch bearer once again and he did the job well at Battleground. The win in a fatal four way match is something that he could be proud of as he prepares for SummerSlam.

#1 Roman Reigns 8

Reigns might’ve not won the match, but he made the impact he needed to look supreme. The company’s faith in Reigns was there to be seen in the way he was booked during the match and the showdown with Cena was the highlight of the match. The day that Reigns will have a gold around his waist is not far away from the looks of it and when he does, the WWE Universe is going to erupt.
