Among Us is a multiplayer, social deduction game that became a global sensation in 2020. In spite of the game’s release in 2018 by InnerSloth, Among Us broke out as a viral online game almost two years after its release. Before the game surfaced as a mainstream game on various streaming platforms, the developers were in the planning stage for a sequel of Among Us. However, plans for a sequel have since been scrapped as the developers focus on making Among Us a better experience for the millions of players across the globe. The game is currently available on Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, and Nintendo Switch.
To play Among Us, players need to download and install the game for their respective devices. Players can do the same here:
Among Us is also scheduled to release for the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X/S in 2021.
Among Us is set in a space-themed environment where players are allotted into two roles, Impostors and Crewmates. The Crewmates, being more in number, are required to complete various tasks during the period of a game. Completing all the tasks present in a respective match, results in the Crewmates’ victory. However, Impostors are always on the hunt for blood as their objective is to eliminate every single Crewmate without getting caught or voted off the island. Impostors are also presented with the ability to travel between locations using the vent system. Games in Among Us can be played amongst 4 to 10 players with a maximum of three Impostors in each game.
There are three maps in Among Us with a fourth map currently in the works. The three maps present in the game are:
The Skeld: The first map of Among Us, The Skeld boasts a spaceship environment consisting of 14 rooms. The Skeld was the only map present in Among Us when it was initially released in June 2018.
Mira HQ: The second map to be introduced in Among Us, Mira HQ was released in August 2019. This the only map in Among Us where all the vents are interconnected with each other which makes traveling across the map much easier for Impostors.
Polus: Currently the largest map in Among Us, Polus was introduced in November 2019 as the third map. Polus also includes an easter egg from the movie Terminator when the “Confirm Ejects” option is turned on.
A fourth map is scheduled to arrive early in 2021. Titled The Airship, the new map is reported to be the largest map in Among Us. The Airship is also rumored to consist of 17 rooms along with the addition of new tasks to accompany the map’s large size.
In spite of the game’s release in June 2018, Among Us did not come up as a mainstream game on streaming platforms and social media until mid-2020. Initially what came as a drive from content creators from South Korea and Brazil, slowly became a global sensation. The game’s rise to popularity in 2020 lead to notable streamers such as xQc, Pokimane, Ninja, and PewDiePie playing the game live on stream. U.S. Congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, even took to streaming Among Us with other notable community figures to raise awareness for voting. Among Us sits comfortably placed at 11th on the all-time Twitchstats leaderboard with over 2.4 billion views.
