One Piece’s Wano arc has been the most exciting and shocking yet in the series for various reasons. With a core theme of Wano being dispersion of the supernatural, it makes sense that so many shocking and important reveals would come.
While this theme has been interwoven to many of the arc’s key developments, One Piece still presented other curveballs that have reshaped the series' landscape. One of these even comes in the upcoming issue, One Piece Chapter 1043.
Here are the eight most shocking developments in One Piece’s Wano arc so far, ranked in no particular order.

1) Kanjuro is the traitor
One Piece’s reveal of Kanjuro being that Red Scabbard traitor is incredibly well done, catching nearly every fan by surprise. His ruthlessness in capturing and beating Momonosuke shows how little compassion for the Kozuki retainer’s struggles.
The reveal of the entire betrayal being orchestrated for over 20 years by Orochi further emphasizes the shock.
2) Komurasaki is Hiyori
After Komurasaki was initially thought to be dead, fans were shocked to learn her “death” had been orchestrated by Denjiro. As a retainer of the Kozuki with a now changed face, Kyoshiro (his new name) sought out Hiyori and created the “Komurasaki character” for her to play.
Eventually, by “killing” Komurasaki, he’s able to ensure the safety of his former lord’s only daughter as the Wano conflict reaches feverish heights. Almost no One Piece fan saw this one coming.
3) The Time-Time Fruit introduced
One of the earliest and most shocking reveals of the Wano arc turned out to be the fact that Kin’emon, Kanjuro, Raizo, and Momonosuke had time traveled. No fan of the series saw this coming, and the execution of such a concept was incredibly well-received.
While fans were initially scared reading the spoilers, author Eiichiro Oda’s execution put everyone’s heart at ease, earning their praise in the process.
4) CP0’s involvement in Wano
The Cipher Pol branch of the World Government has long been a thorn in the side of One Piece’s protagonistic group, the Straw Hats. In Wano, they’re revealed to yet again be meddling in their affairs through their backroom dealings with Orochi and Kaido.
While fans had known the World Government’s interest in Wano’s fate prior, the direct involvement of CP0 was nonetheless shocking. The role they’ve played since their introduction has continued to shock fans, from what the anime has covered so far to chapters yet unadapted.
5) Luffy unlocks Advanced Conqueror’s Haki
Luffy unlocking Advanced Conqueror’s Haki during his fight with Kaido was an incredibly shocking and welcome development.
With this, he now stands amongst the world’s strongest, side-by-side with his opponent, as well as Big Mom, Rocks D. Xebec, and even Gol D. Roger himself. The powerup also allowed Luffy to fight Kaido evenly, which he could not do prior.
6) Zoro unlocks Conqueror’s Haki
Like his captain, Zoro also unlocks Advanced Conqueror’s Haki during One Piece’s currently releasing Wano arc. This reveal lit the fanbase ablaze, creating excitement from nearly every series fan.
Watching Zoro overpower King after accepting his strength is a truly amazing moment, capitalizing on the overall shock of this power-up.
7) Law and Kid’s Awakenings
Speaking of Awakenings, Law and Kid also revealed their Devil Fruit Awakenings against Big Mom in spectacular fashion. Joining the very small list of Awakened Devil Fruit users, they eventually overpower Big Mom with their newfound abilities.
The fight is an absolute spectacle to watch, and the two Supernova’s eventually powering through is a more than welcome, albeit shocking, development.
8) Luffy’s Devil Fruit Awakening
Finally, occurring in One Piece chapter 1043 (the series’ most recent issue), Luffy has seemingly Awakened his Devil Fruit. While confirmation on this remains to be seen, all signs seemingly point to this being the case.
This is, without a doubt, the most shocking development in the Wano arc thus far. The news has lit the fanbase and general anime communities ablaze, with debate, discussion, and predictions ensuing.
While there may be more information soon which tops it, Luffy’s Awakening is undoubtedly the arc’s most shocking development so far.
