The Last Naruto movie could be considered the canon prequel of the Boruto series as it revealed how Hinata and Naruto started to see each other romantically and showcased them closer than any other time in the series.

The series also introduced an Otsutsuki that most fans seemed to have missed because they skipped the movie. Moreover, the movie could have contained a reveal that foreshadowed the return of the main antagonist from the main series in the Boruto series.

During the last part of the movie, Toneri Otsutsuki uses one of his techniques to split the Moon in half. As most fans speculated, this Moon could be one of the big orbs both the protagonist and Sasuke created to seal away Kaguya. This could mean that she got released after this movie.

Kaguya Otsutsuki's return to Boruto could have been revealed in The Last Naruto movie

Kaguya Otsutsuki was the first Otsutsuki who landed on the surface of Earth and had two sons with a local Earthling. After some time, she fell prey to her urge to consume every chakra. Doing so, she even went after her twin sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, but they sealed her using Six Paths-Planetary Construction.

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, she was revived through the body of Madara Uchiha, whom Black Zetsu had manipulated since the day the Uchiha was defeated by Hashirama.

Fortunately, Hagoromo guides the protagonist and Sasuke, which leads to her again being sealed by the duo of Team 7 inside a moon-like mass. But fans speculate that she could have been released in The Last Naruto movie.

The movie was one of the only canon movies in the series on which the author, Masashi Kishimoto, worked. He designed the characters and gave them more of an adult look. The story was centered around Toneri Otsutsuki, a descendant of Hamura Otsutsuki, who wanted to destroy Earth, thinking its inhabitants had tainted the original teachings of the Sage and invented ninjutsu.

He started by making the Moon fall on Earth in bits of pieces. A team from the Hidden Leaf Village, which had the protagonist and Hinata, was assigned the mission to stop this from happening. Toneri was after Hinata, who had to go with the antagonist to save her sister, whom he had kidnapped earlier. After much fighting, the final showdown came between Toneri and the protagonist.

As they fought on the surface of the Moon, the antagonist used the technique 'Golden Wheel Rebirth Explosion' to pulverize the protagonist, but the latter managed to avoid it. Unfortunately, the Moon got split in half during this. After the protagonist defeated Toneri, the Moon shifted back to its original shape due to Kurama's chakra.

Fans speculated that the Moon Toneri split in half could have been the giant mass in which the protagonist and Sasuke sealed Kaguya. This led them to believe that Kaguya could have been released, potentially leading to her return to the Boruto series in the upcoming chapters.

Final thoughts

This theory could be close to impossible to be true for two reasons. The large mass the protagonist and Sasuke sealed Kaguya inside was located in another dimension, not in the dimension of the universe where Hidden Leaf Village was.

Moreover, even if the Moon was the one that could have had Kaguya, it was healed later, making Kaguya's return to the Boruto series close to zero. Take this theory as just an easter egg of the series.
