On Friday, October 13, 2023, the New York Comic Con announced that author and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto's Chainsaw Man had won the Best Manga Harvey Award yet again. This marks the third straight win for the critically acclaimed and commercially successful dark fantasy manga series.

This year, Chainsaw Man competed against several famous manga, including Fujimoto's very own Goodbye, Eri one-shot, and Tatsuya Endo's Spy x Family, both incredibly popular. Fujimoto's flagship series also outdid Wataru Nadatani's Cat + Gamer and the legendary Hayao Miyazaki's Shuna's Journey for the top prize.

Both Chainsaw Man and Endo's Spy x Family manga series have been nominated now for the third year in a row, with the former series emerging victorious each time. With the Best Manga category only being added to the Harvey Awards in 2018, Fujimoto's flagship series has now won half of the total years the category has been around.

Chainsaw Man manga beats Spy x Family to secure Best Manga Harvey Award

Prior to Chainsaw Man's victory in the category over the last three years, the Best Manga Harvey Award was won by three other mangaka and their series. The inaugural year saw Kabi Nagata's My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness take home the top prize, with Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia securing the award in 2019. 2020 saw Kamome Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier win, with Fujimoto's series having won it each year since.

Before the Best Manga category was created, entries in the medium were nominated in the Best American Edition of Foreign Material category. The last manga to win in this category was Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan in 2014. ONE and Yusuke Murata's One-Punch Man was nominated in 2016 but failed to win the now-defunct category that year.

One unique aspect of the Harvey Awards, which honors outstanding work in comics and sequential art, is that comic book professionals themselves nominate entrants and select winners. This is different from the Eisner Awards and other North American comic book industry awards, which typically see critics select a victor.

Fujimoto's incredibly popular Chainsaw Man manga series first began serialization in December 2018, running until December 2020, when its first part concluded. The series then returned in July 2022 to begin its second part, where it has been regularly serialized since then.

An anime adaptation of the first part premiered in October 2022, running for 12 episodes. While there are rumors about a second season for the anime, there has been no official news on its status.
