Izuku Midoriya, also known as Deku, is the main protagonist in the manga and anime series My Hero Academia. Despite being born without a Quirk, which is a superpower in this world, Izuku's exceptional heroism and a strong sense of justice catch the attention of the legendary hero All Might. As a result, Izuku becomes All Might's close pupil and joins Class 1-A at U.A. High School. All Might transferred his powerful Quirk, called One For All, to Izuku, making him the ninth and current holder of this unique ability.

After the events of the Paranormal Liberation War, where the villains Tomura Shigaraki and All For One specifically target Izuku for his Quirk, he decides to leave U.A. High School before completing his first year in order to protect his classmates from harm. However, after receiving encouragement and support from his friends, Izuku ultimately returns to school. He takes on a leadership role and leads the heroes in a final, desperate battle against the villains to save the world.

Appearance

Izuku's Appearance
Izuku

In terms of appearance, Izuku is somewhat short for his age. He has a round face and short dark-green hair that curls at odd angles, casting shadows on his face. His eyes are large and circular, matching the color of his hair, and often have a watery appearance, giving him an innocent and energetic look. Notably, he has four symmetrical freckles in a diamond formation, with one on each cheek.

Throughout the series, Izuku undergoes physical changes. Initially, he is quite skinny, but after ten months of intensive training with All Might, he gains toned muscles that gradually become more defined as he grows stronger. However, his body also bears the marks of his battles. His right hand and arm are visibly scarred and slightly deformed due to his fights with Shoto Todoroki and Muscular, respectively. To support his damaged right arm, Izuku wears a black compression sleeve that is partially visible when he wears short sleeves.

In terms of attire, during his time in Junior High School, Izuku wore a black gakuran uniform with yellow buttons and his signature red high top boots. At home, he typically wears a green jinbei over a white shirt and gray sweatpants. At U.A High School, he dons the standard male uniform, consisting of a light gray blazer with dark turquoise trimmings over a white dress shirt and dress pants. He also wears a red tie, although he doesn't tie it properly, leaving it shorter than usual. Instead of the standard brown shoes, he continues to wear his red shoes.

Regarding hero costumes, Izuku's first hero costume, known as "Costume Alpha," is a light green full-body jumpsuit with a red belt, elbow pads, knee pads, and gloves. He wears a mask that resembles All Might's hairstyle, along with a respirator featuring a makeshift smile. This costume sustains severe damage during his battle against Katsuki Bakugo and has to be repaired, so Izuku temporarily wears the U.A. gym uniform. The gym uniform is a dark blue high-collared tracksuit with thick white lines forming the letters "U" and "A" over his torso and legs, accompanied by a respirator.

In his second hero costume, known as "Costume Beta," Izuku's attire undergoes several modifications. The color palette shifts to a darker teal shade, accompanied by black outlines instead of white. The costume itself appears sturdier and more combat-ready in its overall appearance. Light beige shoulder pads are added, providing additional protection. The knee pads are extended to cover a larger portion of his legs, now reaching up to his thighs. His gloves receive a makeover, featuring blue stripes as decorative elements. Notably, Izuku no longer wears a mask with this costume, although it remains a part of his outfit, just not frequently worn. These alterations reflect Izuku's growth and progression as a hero, adapting his costume to better suit his evolving abilities and fighting style.

Personality

Izuku is characterized as a timid and reserved boy who often reacts excessively to abnormal situations, expressing himself with exaggerated expressions. Initially, he is portrayed as insecure, vulnerable, and non-expressive, largely due to years of being looked down upon by Katsuki for lacking a Quirk. Katsuki constantly belittles Izuku for his dreams of becoming a hero. However, as Izuku enters the U.A High School, makes new friends, and faces Katsuki in the Battle Trial Arc, he undergoes a gradual transformation, becoming more confident, brave, and eager to prove his worth as a hero. Over time, he develops strong leadership skills, along with a passion for heroism and strategic thinking, which elevate his role as a central figure within Class 1-A, alongside Katsuki.

Izuku possesses a diligent and determined nature, displaying immense enthusiasm for hero-related topics. His dream of becoming a hero drives him to meticulously document his observations and learnings about various Quirks and fighting techniques. This practice hones his analytical mind, enabling him to formulate complex battle plans within seconds, utilizing the Quirks of both allies and enemies to his advantage. However, Izuku's habit of mumbling incessantly can annoy or unsettle those around him. He frequently records his observations in multiple notebooks titled "Hero Analysis for the Future," referring to them during school activities or at night.

Kind-hearted and emotional, Izuku never hesitates to assist or rescue individuals in danger, even if he feels inadequate or unqualified. His instinctual urge to protect others often overrides his self-preservation instincts, a trait All Might acknowledges as the most important and genuine quality of a hero—the sincere desire to help people. This tendency to prioritize others' lives over his own can become extreme, potentially stemming from the bullying Izuku endured for being Quirkless, which led him to devalue his own worth. He is even willing to injure himself, such as repeatedly breaking his arms, for the sake of others, disregarding warnings of permanent damage. Eventually, Izuku adjusts his fighting style to minimize strain on his body, although he occasionally reverts to old habits when faced with dire circumstances.

Izuku also demonstrates a propensity for involving himself in the personal and emotional problems of others, believing that a hero should intervene in people's lives. While this audacious spirit initially perplexes or even appears insane to some, it garners loyalty, gratitude, and respect from individuals who were previously antagonistic towards him. Characters like Tenya Ida, Shoto, Hitoshi Shinso, Kota Izumi, Sir Nighteye, the Hero Killer: Stain, and Lady Nagant acknowledge Izuku's unwavering determination to help others.

Having a deep admiration for heroes, Izuku possesses extensive knowledge of their history and abilities. He often surprises heroes themselves with his vast understanding of their past achievements. Izuku enjoys sharing his knowledge with others, frequently geeking out and rambling about the heroes he encounters. All Might, in particular, has had a profound impact on Izuku's life, becoming a role model and shaping his decisions and actions. Izuku idolizes All Might, collects merchandise related to him, and strives to live up to his legacy. Inherited with All Might's Quirk, One For All, Izuku feels immense pressure to succeed as the greatest hero of all time, constantly seeking ways to improve his Quirk utilization. The unwavering trust and approval he receives from All Might play a vital role in his growth as a hero, especially when plagued by self-doubt and feelings of unworthiness.

During combat, Izuku displays a more assertive and intense demeanor, resembling the characteristics of Katsuki. He becomes louder and more unwavering, driven by a strong desire for victory. Izuku sees Katsuki as the embodiment of someone who relentlessly pursues triumph, which influences his behavior in combat situations. However, he admits that he is not particularly fond of this side of himself and consciously tries to keep it in check. Nonetheless, in dire circumstances or when faced with opponents who have harmed his loved ones, Izuku can succumb to a nearly feral rage, unleashing his full power and determination, as seen in his confrontations with Overhaul and Tomura.

In addition to his combat-oriented personality, Izuku possesses an empathetic nature and a desire to understand the villains he encounters, hoping to save them from their destructive paths. While initially perceiving Tomura as a mindless madman driven by a desire to harm others, Izuku's perspective shifts after learning about his tragic past and sensing the pain within him through their connection via One For All and All For One. This revelation reinforces Izuku's belief that a true hero saves others rather than kills, prompting him to delve into the reasons behind villains' choices and seek alternatives to violence. Although he acknowledges the need for force when no other option exists, such as in his battle against Muscular, Izuku genuinely wishes to reach out and assist villains in their recovery and reformation. He even offers Kai Chisaki, whom he still holds animosity towards, the chance to redeem himself and save his boss by mending his ways, exemplifying his profound sense of compassion and humanity.

Abilities

Izuku possessed exceptional abilities even before receiving his Quirk, primarily due to his extensive knowledge of hero skills and tactics. He dedicated years to studying Pro Heroes, allowing him to effectively apply his knowledge in crisis situations. His unwavering bravery and strong desire to become a hero further contributed to his mentality of protecting others. Prior to acquiring his Quirk from All Might, he demonstrated his boldness and application of heroic skills by confronting the Sludge Villain and rescuing Katsuki, leaving a lasting impression on the No. 1 Hero.

After inheriting One For All from All Might and undergoing training, Izuku gained the ability to tap into a stockpile of powerful energy. This enabled him to move at incredible speeds and defeat large adversaries with a single punch. However, the physical toll he experienced at the time limited his ability to fight effectively and compete with his peers. Nevertheless, he possessed remarkable physical durability, and his determination allowed him to endure the drawbacks of One For All to a great extent.

Izuku's combat abilities enabled him to engage in battles against formidable adversaries, notably the likes of Gentle Criminal. Despite the significant drawbacks of One For All, Izuku's intelligence and resourcefulness enabled him to find effective ways to utilize his Quirk in combat. He also retained his ability to act instinctively based on his notes and possessed basic hand-to-hand combat knowledge. By effectively applying his knowledge and skills, Izuku was able to hold his own against powerful classmates like Katsuki and Shoto.

Under the guidance of Gran Torino, Izuku gained better control over One For All, leading to the development of his signature technique, One For All: Full Cowl. This technique significantly enhanced his maneuverability, strength, and minimized the physical repercussions of using his Quirk. As a result, Izuku's overall fighting capabilities improved significantly, earning praise from Gran Torino, who acknowledged Izuku's progress as surpassing his own level during the Sports Festival. This improvement allowed Izuku to compete more closely with his classmates in the physical aspects of the Hero Course and even face formidable villains like the Hero Killer: Stain, who had previously overwhelmed numerous Pro Heroes single-handedly.

As Izuku continued to master his Quirk, his practical skills also improved. Alongside his skill development, his increased experience and confidence served as an inspiration to his classmates. However, Izuku's body remained vulnerable to the drawbacks of One For All, which put him at a disadvantage against powerful opponents like Muscular or Overhaul, whose Quirks proved too potent against One For All's weaker outputs. In order to protect his body, especially his arms, Izuku eventually developed his own unique fighting style, further differentiating himself from All Might.

Currently, Izuku is widely recognized by his classmates as a strong and dependable leader. His strength and intelligence are equally respected. However, his Quirk remains a mystery to them, including Izuku himself, making him an unpredictable ally for better or worse. As Izuku continues to grow, so does the power of One For All. With the possibility of unlocking new abilities in the future, Izuku must work even harder to fully harness the potential of the Quirk entrusted to him.

During the Paranormal Liberation War, Izuku's skills underwent tremendous growth, allowing him to fight alongside exceptional Pro Heroes such as Eraser Head, Gran Torino, and even the current number one Pro Hero, Endeavor. His most notable achievement thus far was holding his own against the Grand Commander of the Liberation Front, Tomura Shigaraki, who possessed the power of All For One and a modified body comparable to All Might's strength. Despite Tomura's overwhelming power, Izuku managed to force the powerful villain on the defensive, showcasing his remarkable abilities.

Following the aftermath of the Paranormal Liberation War, Izuku displayed even greater mastery over his Quirks. He effortlessly outmaneuvered his enemies with Blackwhip and utilized 45% of One For All. He demonstrated the ability to detect danger without being overwhelmed, created a new Ultimate Move using Smokescreen to prove a doubter wrong, and seamlessly switched between his arsenal of Quirks during battles against Muscular and Lady Nagant. In a confrontation with Class 1-A, Izuku exhibited the capability to fight on equal terms with some of U.A High School's most powerful students and completely dominate them, even when severely outnumbered, although exhaustion and stress eventually caught up with him.

During the Final War, it was acknowledged that Izuku was the only one with a chance of defeating Tomura, who had reached his full power. In their final encounter, Izuku matched Tomura in terms of strength and speed, despite the latter undergoing a transformation into his final form.

Trained Muscles

The utilization of One For All necessitates the possession of strong muscles as the immense power of the Quirk can have destructive effects on the user's body if their physical strength is inadequate. In preparation for inheriting One For All, Izuku underwent rigorous training under All Might's guidance for ten months to physically condition his body. As a result, he developed a well-built and muscular physique, surpassing that of an average student outside the U.A hero course. During the Quirk Apprehension Test, Izuku demonstrated his impressive grip strength of 56 kilograms and completed the 50-meter dash in a remarkable time of 7.02 seconds (reaching a speed of approximately 15.93 mph or 25.64 kph). Even after these initial achievements, Izuku continues to diligently train his muscles every day, steadily enhancing his physical strength throughout the series. It is not uncommon to find him engaging in activities such as running laps, utilizing dumbbells or grippers for strength training, and performing exercises like the air chair during breaks between classes.

Izuku's Immense Strength

Even without the use of his Quirk, Izuku possesses remarkable physical strength for someone his age. During his training with All Might, he demonstrated the ability to carry All Might on his back while walking, despite All Might's considerable weight of 255 kilograms or 562 pounds. In the U.A. Sports Festival, Izuku showcased his strength by lifting a slab of metal roughly the size of his body and using it as an effective weapon to cleave a one-point bot in two.

When utilizing the power of One For All, Izuku's strength reaches unprecedented levels. At 5% power output, he can shatter metal pillars with a single punch, and at 8% power output, he can lift a steel I-beam with one hand. With 15% power output and the assistance of Blackwhip, he can lift multiple vehicles into the air. At 30% power output, he can lift a bus full of people with one hand and run fast enough to evade Tomura's decay ability while restraining an enhanced Tomura using Blackwhip and his anger.

During the Dark Hero Arc, Izuku's strength further increases, allowing him to use 45% of his power as his regular output without experiencing backlash. At this level, he can defeat a weakened Muscular with a single punch, casually collapse a building during a battle with his classmates, and break free from Fumikage Tokoyami's Ragnarök technique, surprising his friends. At his maximum power output of 100%, Izuku's strength surpasses even that of All Might. He can effortlessly destroy massive Villain Bots, demolish twelve-story buildings, generate powerful wind pressure with a flick of his fingers, and create massive explosions with single punches.

Furthermore, when combining the Second User's Quirk, Gearshift, and the Third User's Fa Jin, Izuku's punches become even faster, building up enough kinetic energy to inflict catastrophic damage on "Tomura" during the Final War. Each punch breaks the sound barrier, with the delayed sound being noticed by Mirio before it becomes audible. This combination amplifies Izuku's strength beyond his 100% limit, reaching what is described as 120% power.

Immense Speed and Reflexes

Izuku possesses impressive speed and reflexes both with and without the use of Full Cowl. Even without Full Cowl, he can react swiftly enough to defend against Shoto's ice attacks, which occur in the blink of an eye, and keep up with Katsuki's movements in their initial fight.

When utilizing Full Cowl, Izuku's reflexes and movement speed elevate to higher levels. At 5% power output, he can match the speed of Tenya's Recipro Burst, which moves faster than the eye can see. At 8% power output, he surpasses Katsuki's own speed and easily overwhelms Hitoshi in combat, despite Hitoshi's improvements. At 20% power output, he outpaces Overhaul, and at 30% power output, he can keep up with the enhanced speed of Tomura. At 45% power output, he can dodge Lady Nagant's bullets and keep up with Muscular's movements, which he previously struggled to follow.

When utilizing his Faux 100%, Izuku's speed rivals that of All Might in his prime. He can even surpass the velocity of a sniper bullet fired by Lady Nagant, reaching and pushing Overhaul aside before the bullet can complete its entire trajectory. At this speed, it requires the combined effort of Class-A just to keep up with him, even in his exhausted state.

After unlocking and mastering the Second User's Quirk, Gearshift, Izuku's speed becomes incredibly enhanced. He leaves the sound of his attacks far behind his movements, and the speed is so immense that the sound of his punches is delayed before it can be heard. Even "Tomura" acknowledges that his eyes are incapable of keeping up with Izuku at this extraordinary speed.

Keen Intellect

Izuku possesses exceptional intelligence, which he has demonstrated through his keen observation, analysis, intuition, and resourcefulness. Despite his intensive One For All training, Izuku maintains high academic grades, indicating his ability to balance studying and hero training effectively. His intelligence has proven to be a valuable asset alongside his Quirk.

Izuku is a quick learner and has rapidly grasped the mechanics of One For All and devised strategies to overcome its limitations. While he has drawn inspiration from All Might for some of his moves, the majority of Izuku's techniques were conceived by him through moments of inspiration, highlighting his creativity.

Additionally, Izuku possesses extensive knowledge about Pro Heroes, his classmates, and their Quirks. He diligently records detailed information in his Hero Analysis for the Future. His observational skills and desire to learn from the best heroes contribute to his continuous pursuit of knowledge.

As a strategist and tactician, Izuku excels. Combining his rapid learning abilities and understanding of Quirks, he devises plans that maximize his friends' abilities. His calculations have been pivotal in securing victories, escaping dangerous situations, and saving lives during various incidents at U.A. His classmates greatly respect his intelligence, often looking to him for guidance and following his strategies. Even the highly intelligent Momo Yaoyorozu views Izuku as a reference.

Adaptability

Izuku's analytical abilities allow him to replicate the techniques of others. After training with Gran Torino and gaining a better understanding of One For All, he was able to replicate Katsuki's moves during a training exercise. By training and drawing inspiration from his classmate Tsuyu Asui, he became proficient with Blackwhip and could generate a dark tendril from his tongue, replicating Tsuyu's "Froppy Style" combat. As he unlocks more assimilated Quirks from One For All, Izuku can craft and combine them to create custom Ultimate Moves such as Blockchain, Faux 100 Percent, and Faux 100 Percent: Manchester Smash.

Leadership Skills

Izuku has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills on multiple occasions. He earned the trust of Ochaco Uraraka and Tenya early on in his U.A. life, leading to his selection as class representative, although he later relinquished the position to Tenya. During the U.S.J Incident, Tsuyu and Minoru Mineta placed their faith in Izuku, following his instructions without hesitation. By the First Term Final Exam, he had fought alongside Katsuki and Shoto, who had previously been antagonistic toward him. Izuku's heroic drive and practical intellect make him one of the main motivators within his class, alongside Katsuki.

Indomitable Will

Izuku possesses extraordinary willpower, which is one of his greatest traits. From the beginning, he displayed determination and developed strong willpower to pursue his goal of becoming the greatest hero. He never gives up, even when faced with menacing adversaries, doubters, and those who believe in him. He was the first to move after All For One instilled fear in him and his classmates. When Sir Nighteye foresaw Izuku's death and the failure of Eri's rescue, Izuku refused to give up and promised to change his fate. He consistently demonstrates the ability to persevere, even in the face of severe injuries. During the Paranormal Liberation War, Izuku resists Tomura's terrifying aura, quickly recovering from a momentary hallucination of his own death. He confronts Tomura without fear and is willing to do whatever it takes to stop him, even at the risk of losing his arms or worse. Despite shattering his limbs and sustaining horrific injuries, Izuku develops the Froppy Style with Blackwhip and continues to fight against Tomura.

After the Paranormal Liberation War, Izuku's willpower is noticed by Yo Shindo, who remarks on the change and development he perceives. When confronting All For One in the Haibori Woods mansion, Izuku's anger-filled eyes and determination to defeat him are evident. However, during the Dark Hero Arc, the stress and trauma of the war, along with leaving U.A., take a toll on Izuku. He overexerts himself, neglects proper nutrition, and constantly fends off villains, displaying concerning behavior. His actions during this time are motivated by a desire to protect his friends from further harm. Witnessing Lady Nagant's disfigurement intensifies his rage and hatred toward All For One. Eventually, after being rescued by his friends, receiving an apology from Katsuki, and public defense from Ochaco Uraraka, Izuku emerges from this depressive state and strengthens his resolve to fight against the villains.

Deku’s use of Quirks

One For All is Izuku's primary Quirk, which he inherited from Toshinori Yagi (All Might). It allows him to stockpile an enormous amount of raw power, greatly enhancing all of his physical abilities. When activated, red, vein-like lines appear on the empowered part of his body.

Izuku can focus the stockpiled power on a specific body part or distribute it evenly throughout his body. However, concentrating the power in one area puts a greater strain on that part. With training and experience, Izuku's body has become more accustomed to handling the Quirk, and he can currently use up to 45% of its full power without breaking his bones, with 30% being his normal output.

What sets Izuku apart from previous users of One For All is his ability to access and utilize the Quirks of the previous holders, thanks to the Quirk factors merging within One For All. He can use these assimilated Quirks individually or even combine them for more versatility in combat. The known Quirks within One For All are as follows:

Gearshift: The Quirk of the second user allows Izuku to change the speed and velocity of any target he touches, including himself. It enhances his speed and impact force.

Fa Jin: The Quirk of the third user enables Izuku to store and release kinetic energy. By performing repetitive movements, he can generate explosive bursts of speed and power.

Danger Sense: The Quirk of the fourth user, Hikage Shinomori, grants Izuku the ability to detect threats in his surroundings. However, it causes a stabbing sensation in his head and takes a toll on his body due to the amplification of One For All.

Blackwhip: The Quirk of the fifth user, Daigoro Banjo, allows Izuku to create tendrils of black energy from his body. It is useful for grappling, capturing opponents, and enhancing his mobility.

Smokescreen: The Quirk of the sixth user, En, enables Izuku to generate a dense cloud of purple smoke that obscures vision over a wide area.

Float: The Quirk of the seventh user, Nana Shimura, grants Izuku the ability to levitate and suspend himself in mid-air, essentially providing flight capabilities.

In addition to these Quirks, Izuku has access to a subconscious realm within One For All. This realm contains vestiges of the consciousnesses of the previous One For All holders. While Izuku initially had little control over this aspect, he can now freely communicate with the vestiges while still conscious. However, his body's full materialization and freedom of movement within the realm are limited. Izuku is the first known living holder of One For All to have gained access to this realm.

Costumes

Costume Zeta: This is the sixth version of Izuku's hero costume. After his previous outfit was heavily damaged, this new costume incorporates key features from previous versions. It includes improved arm bracers and iron soles, which provide support to his arms and legs. The hood has been removed and replaced with Gran Torino's cape, which now functions as a scarf. The damaged mask from his previous costume is still a part of this one.

Iron Soles: These Iron Armor Soles were designed by Mei and are attached to Izuku's signature red shoes. When Izuku kicks something, the soles absorb the impact and distribute the kinetic energy, increasing the strength of his kicks. Izuku requested these soles to enhance the power of his kicks after deciding to change his fighting style.

Air Force Gloves: Also created by Mei, these gloves allow Izuku to focus and project bursts of pressurized air by flicking his fingers. This enables Izuku to perform long-range projectile attacks using One For All. Unfortunately, the gloves and arm bracers were completely destroyed during Izuku's battle with Tomura in the Paranormal Liberation War. However, Mei later provides him with new versions of the gloves.

Mid-Gauntlet : Presumably created by Melissa after the Paranormal Liberation War, the Mid-Gauntlet is similar to the Full Gauntlet. It allows Izuku to utilize One For All's power at higher percentages without the risk of harming his body, although it will break if used at full power (100%). Following his fight with Lady Nagant, Izuku's left Mid-Gauntlet is partially destroyed and becomes almost unusable. He subsequently receives new replica Mid-Gauntlets from Mei.

Full Gauntlet: Created by Melissa, this gauntlet was given to Izuku after she realized that he was intentionally limiting his use of One For All. It was obtained during the faux villain course at the I-Island Expo. The Full Gauntlet enables Izuku to utilize his Quirk at higher power levels without risking self-injury. However, the gauntlet was later destroyed during Izuku and All Might's final battle against Wolfram.
