The Philadelphia Phillies may be without first baseman Rhys Hoskins for some time. The slugger injured his knee on Thursday during Grapefruit League action against the Detroit Tigers.

Hoskins went to retreat on a one-hopper towards first base and immediately fell down, clutching his knee. He later had to be helped off the field via a medical cart. It's an unfortunate injury as opening day is right around the corner.

The Phillies said that Hoskins would undergo further evaluation and testing to diagnose the injury. An update will be provided when made available.

Hoskins' injury is a punch to the gut for the Phillies, who will already be without outfielder Bryce Harper until at least the All-Star break. Harper had to undergo elbow surgery during the offseason.

"Absolutely hate this," one fan tweeted.
"Prayers up for Rhys," another fan tweeted.

This was the last thing Philadelphia Phillies fans wanted to see. They had high expectations for him this season. He's coming off 30 home runs last year, the second most of his career.

Rhys Hoskins became a fan favorite after his monster performances in the postseason last year. He hit a huge home run in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves. And then went on to hit four home runs in the NLCS against the San Diego Padres.

This was supposed to be a huge year for Rhys Hoskins. He's in the last year of his contract with the Philadelphia Phillies and will be a free agent when the season ends.

Now the team has to decide on who they are going to roll out at first base. They could shift Darick Hall, who is slated to be the team's DH, over to the position. They could also move Alec Bohm to first base and employ Edmundo Sosa at third base.

Whatever they decide, they are going to have to do it quickly. The Phillies open up against the Texas Rangers on March 30, one week from Thursday.

It will be interesting to see how the team manages its lineup without Hoskins. They're still loaded with talent and have the means to win ballgames. Perhaps, Hoskins' injury is only minor, and he'll be back within a reasonable amount of time.
