ICC Champions Trophy Captains 2025

Captains playing in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

According to ICC's official website, Rohit Sharma (IND), Nazmul Hossain Shanto (BAN), Mitchell Santner (NZ), Mohammad Rizwan (PAK), Hashmatullah Shahidi (AFG), Steve Smith (AUS), Temba Bavuma (SA), and Jos Buttler (ENG) are the captains of their respective teams in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Among these captains, Rohit Sharma is the only one who previously lifted the trophy as a player in 2013.

Steve Smith was made the captain after Australia's ODI captain and World Cup 2023 winner Pat Cummins was withdrawn from the tournament, as reported by Australian cricket's official website on 12 February, 2025. Australia's coach Andrew McDonald told SEN radio that they were looking for a captain for the team and praised Steve Smith for his decision-making abilities and his previous experience as the captain of the team.

Rohit Sharma (IND)

Rohit Sharma was appointed as the Indian captain in all three formats of the game in February 2022. He previously played 10 matches for India in the ICC CT in 2013 and 2017, five matches in each edition. He scored 481 runs and is the 14th highest runs scorer in the tournament as reported by Cricmetric. He has an average of 53.44 and a strike rate of 82.50. Sharma scored four half-centuries and a century in the competition and his highest score is 123 which he made in 2017.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto (BAN)

Nazmul Hossain Shanto is captaining the Bangladesh national team in the ICC Champions Trophy for the first time in the 2025 edition. He was named the captain of the national team in all formats in February 2024.

Mitchell Santner (NZ)

Mitchell Santner is representing New Zealand in the ICC CT as a captain for the first time in the 2025 edition. He previously played the tournament in 2017 where he played 3 matches. Santner scored 25 runs with an average of 12.5 and had a highest score of 14. His bowling stats include 2 innings, 1 wicket, and a best figure of 1/54.

Mohammad Rizwan (PAK)

Mohammad Rizwan was named the captain of Pakistan in the limited-over cricket format in October 2024. He is representing Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy as a captain and as a player for the first time.

Hashmatullah Shahidi (AFG)

Hashmatullah Shahidi and his team Afghanistan are set to make their debut in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He has been serving as the captain of the side since October 2023. He played the first test of Afghanistan’s history in 2018 and scored a double century as the first player from the country in 2021.

Steve Smith (AUS)

Steve Smith is participating in the ICC CT for the second time in this year's edition, as he previously played in the tournament in 2017 as a player. The former Australian captain (2014-2015, 2021, 2023) has become the skipper of the national team after the absence of Pat Cummins in the tournament. Smith played three matches in the ICC CT 2017, where he scored 86 runs and a half-century with a highest score of 56.

Temba Bavuma (SA)

Temba Bavuma is representing South Africa for the first time in the ICC Champions Trophy as a player and as a captain as well. He previously represented the Proteas in the 2023 World Cup.

Jos Buttler (ENG)

Jos Buttler is representing England as a captain for the first time. He previously played the two editions of the tournament in 2013 and 2017 respectively. He played a total of seven matches and scored 109 runs with an average of 21.8 and a strike rate of 107.9. With one half century, Buttler has a highest score of 61 in the ICC CT, as of February 2025.
