The first Test match between these two was played from 25 to 28 June 1932, when India was still under colonial rule. England won the match by 158 runs. India’s first win against England came in 1952 at Chennai. The Indian side led by Vijay Hazare won the match by an innings and 8 runs. Vinoo Mankad gave an exceptional bowling performance by taking 12 wickets. India had to wait for ten years for their next win against England. The back to back wins in 1962 at Kolkata and Chennai saw India win their first Test series against England. The Indian side however wasn’t able to dominate the English for a long period in Test match cricket. England lead the head to head tie in Test matches by quite some margin.

The first IND vs ENG head to head face off in ODI format took place in 1974 at Leeds. The home side won the match by 4 wickets. The first win for India came in December of 1981 in Jalandhar. The next match was also won by India, leading to India’s first ODI series win against England. India also defeated England in the semi-final of the 1983 World Cup. Overall, India has an upper hand in the 50-over format with 11 more wins than England.


India clinched the Paytm ODI Series Trophy between India and England on 28th March 2021 winning the series by 2-1.

The first T20I meeting between these two sides took place in the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup at Durban. The eventual champions won the match by 8 runs. The match is well known for Yuvraj hitting six sixes in a single over off Stuart Broad. IND vs ENG head to head in Twenty20 cricket is evenly matched with each side having seven wins.


India clinched the Paytm T20 Series Trophy between India and England on 20th March 2021 winning the series by 3-2.
