The ICC World Cup 2019 is in the history books now. England and New Zealand made history by producing arguably the best ODI match in cricket history which saw the hosts triumph and win the tournament for the first time. A lot of new heroes emerged in this edition.

Players like Shakib Al Hasan, Rohit Sharma, David Warner, Kane Williamson and Joe Root shone in the batting department whereas the bowlers too tried to take the best assist from the conditions and dominate the batting line-ups. Every team taking part in the tournament had a strong bowling attack and hence, the batsmen had to face a stern test in English conditions.

In the sport of cricket, the best way of putting pressure on the batting team is to take wickets. However, in limited overs cricket, the importance of maiden overs increases very much. If a bowler bowls 6 consecutive dot deliveries to a batsman, he gets a psychological advantage when he comes in to bowl the next over.

In this article, we will have a look at the three bowlers who bowled the most maiden overs in this year's World Cup.


#3 Pat Cummins - 6

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins formed a dangerous fast bowling pair with compatriot Mitchell Starc to dismantle the opponents' batting line-ups. Cummins played 10 matches in the tournament and bowled 86.1 overs for his team. The right-arm quick bowled at a fantastic economy rate of 4.95. His 6 maiden overs made a major difference to his economy rate.

Though Starc emerged as the leading wicket-taker for Australia, no one can deny the fact that Cummins played a crucial role in Australia's success. With 14 wickets in 10 games, he was equally instrumental in helping his team reach the semi-finals.

#2 Jofra Archer - 8

Playing his first ever international tournament, Jofra Archer impressed the cricket world with his magnificent performances for England. Archer featured in all the 11 matches that the hosts played, bowling 100.5 and taking 20 wickets in the tournament to emerge as the highest wicket-taker of his team.

Besides contributing to the team's cause with his wicket-taking ability, the West Indies-born player also bowled 8 maiden overs. Though Archer was instrumental in the team's success in the semifinal and final, he could not bowl a maiden over in either of the games, nevertheless bowled some crucial overs in the back end of the innings.

Archer's two maidens in the match against Bangladesh was his best in an innings. He was very successful in his white ball initiation and given his style of bowling, the fans are excited to see him play Test cricket for England.

The man, who carried the bowling attack of India on his shoulders finished his debut World Cup as the bowler with the most maiden overs in the tournament. Jasprit Bumrah put a kept a tight check on the run flow in the powerplay overs. He gave no freedom to the opening batsmen and bowled a plethora of dot balls in the initial overs.

In a particularly defininng performance, the Gujarat-born player bowled 2 maiden overs upfront in the game against Sri Lanka. Bumrah scalped 18 wickets throughout the campaign at an average of 20.61. His economy rate of 4.41 was one of the best in the tournament.

Unfortunately, he could not play in the final of the World Cup as India exited the tournament in the semifinal stage after a disappointing batting show against New Zealand.
