Piola holds the record for the highest goals scored in the Italian first league with 290 goals, a record that still stands 63 years later. The player holds the honour of being the all-time top scorer of three different clubs Pro Vercelli, Lazio and Novara. Despite some brilliant performances, the Italian could never manage to win the league and ended up as the runner-up with Lazio and Juventus.

The player who is widely recognised as an all-time great has his name on two Italian stadiums in Novara and Vercelli which were renamed after his death. In 2011, Piola was posthumously inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame.
